Should these 'vigilantes' be charged with manslaughter?

In Townsville, Australia, a car was stolen. The car was chased (presumedly by the owner) and they clipped the stolen car. The vigilante car lost control, crossed into oncoming traffic and killed a girl on a motorcycle.

Dangerous driving charges will probably be laid, but should manslaughter be added?

reply

Yes. Even if the police were the ones chasing/clipping.

They love to do this in the U.S. -- initiate wild, 100 mph car chases and attempt to stop the fleeing vehicles with spike strips or by hitting the car on the rear quarter (PIT manuever). All well and good until innocent third-parties are killed and then you find out the car was being chased for a traffic violation.

The "get 'em at all costs" mentality is lethal and must end.

reply

Agreed. It's just a car. If the police really want to, finding a stolen car the next day is a walk in the park. Even if they won't do it, there's insurance anyway. It's ridiculous to do dangerous pursuit just for a stolen car. A needless death.

I don't know of the case, but based on what you've said there, yes (or some other appropriate charge; here in the UK in those circumstances it would probably be 'Death by Reckless Driving').
