So there are a lot of banned words here, huh?

I was trying to post a movie title riddle but it kept violating the Moviechat standards and wouldn't let me post it. I even edited it but couldn't tell which word was banned, since they are all regular old neutral words. (It finally posted using the word Pile and I had no profanity or anything in the post)

I had a comment for another thread yesterday, but gave up trying to post it after failing to understand which word from it was banned.

Will this one post?

I doubt it. The "Standards" page (https://moviechat.org/standards) states that excessive profanity is forbidden. Excessive, so it seems some is permissible. I've dropped a few F-bombs here and there and have never gotten any complaints. The mods seem to take a very laissez faire approach, interfering only when absolutely necessary. Racial slurs might be another matter; I don't know if the N word would be bleeped, for example.

What a world we live in where you are descirbing using words that are in the english language dictionary you say "xyz" word.

You wanna say fuck in the context of saying it is a swear word then just say the word. All this pussy footing around just to possibly not offend someone, drives me mad.

This is not a dig at you, i'm just talking in general terms, I see it all the time.

> All this pussy footing around just to possibly not offend someone, drives me mad.

Agreed. I have no patience for snowflakes either.

> You wanna say fuck in the context of saying it is a swear word then just say the word.

The problem is that indiscriminate use of the word trivializes it and dilutes its effectiveness. In bygone days, "fuck" was a nuclear class profanity, so much so that a kid who accidentally used in front of his parents might find himself sucking a soap bar like little Ralphie in A Christmas Story. Now? Its use on cable television is ubiquitous, and even on broadcast television where it's not supposed to be heard it still happens with little penalty imposed on broadcasters. It's inevitable that the FCC will drop it from the list of banned words -- the course of current events demands it. Then we'll see it used in advertising -- "Campbell's soup is fucking good!" "Black and Decker, when you don't want to fuck up the job." As an insult, "fuck you" will be no more powerful than "you're a jerk." And then, when you need a nuclear weapon to burn someone who really deserves it, say, a quivering, trembling snowflake, what will you say?

Is it necessary to call people "snowflakes" because they don't like certain words though?
Then again, I guess I can see being a "snowflake" as being a unique and beautiful (but fragile) person.

No, but I don't consider people to be snowflakes just because they don't like certain words. To me, snowflakes are those who take umbrage at being confronted with any view they disagree with; expect all controversial ideas to be tagged with trigger warnings; cry foul at any assertion that contradicts their warped worldview. A snowflake is someone who seriously believes that he or she has the right to sail through life never being offended by anything, and that everyone else is obliged to respect that right. They implicitly claim that the rest of us exist to serve them. As such, they do deserve nuclear class abuse, a real verbal kick in the face.

Ha! I barely glance at Twitter, but I believe that, because from what I hear so many of its users honor the snowflake mentality. It seems that every day we hear of someone deleting a tweet just because someone else was bothered by it. As if that would somehow erase the fact that they had made the statement in the first place! What an utterly cowardly act. I'm proud to say that in my entire 15+ years on the IMDB boards then on here, I have never deleted or altered a post once it has been quoted or replied to. I've occasionally added a PS within a post to correct an error, and I've had to give apologies a few times. It hasn't been easy. There was one post I made on IMDB about twelve years ago that I was mortified over afterward, that I desperately wanted to bury. But erase the evidence? No. I take full responsibility for what I say, good and bad, and anyone who wants to judge me has the full record available to them. I figure doing it that way is just part of being a man.

I changed c r a p to j u n k and yet it still wouldn't post. I finally went with "pile" and that was acceptable.

Maybe it's because my account is too new, I also still have a waiting period to post but it's getting shorter over time. It was over 10 minutes yesterday and now it's under that, like 7 minutes.

Crap and Junk

It doesn't matter if your account is new. It's the same rules for everyone, regardless.

reply

I posted "The pile on the left."

Those words were declined when used in place of "pile" for me.

reply

C r a p = another word for s h i t.
J u n k = slang for the male genitalia.

It sounds like the moderator might have been a new hire learning the ropes, or else someone was being a bit overzealous. They may have looked at the words as single entities and didn't read the sentence to understand the context.

reply

There was no moderator. I got an error saying the post violated the standards, so I would have to edit and retry. Nothing got deleted.

I don't recall having any problems like that when I first joined, but that was over three years ago. Might be that they've changed policies since then. It seems there are more trolls on here now than there used to be, so maybe the mods keep a tighter rein on new users. I'm only guessing there, I haven't heard of any such policy, but it would make sense.

reply

I've never had a problem.

reply

Weird. I've never had any issues.

I use the following as a guide to make sure I don't get edited by the moderators. Worked for me so far.

Can't say I have noticed that. I have used most of the swear words on here.
