Silly / uncommon movie character names that worked and didn't work

Worked:
Buffy Summers from Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Who'd name their kid Buffy lol? Yet somehow it sounds right.

Didn't work:
Murph (Murphy Cooper) from Interstellar. That's just a weird name to call your daughter. Not funny, not clever. Fail.

reply

Worked:
Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games. The name has a familiar yet foreign / weird / unreal tone, really matches the theme of the movie series.

Didn't work:
Baby from Baby Driver. The sole purpose of naming the character Baby is just so the movie could be titled Baby Driver. Truly nonsense.

Worked:
Ferris Bueller - Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986) - "Save Ferris" skywriting.

Didn't work:
Gaylord Focker - Meet the Parents/Meet the Fockers/Little Fockers - So we are supposed to laugh every time you say the name? It got old before the film started.

reply

Harry Hole from The Snowman.

I'm going to say that doesn't work for some reason, but I can't put my finger in it. On it, I meant!

reply

idk, it seems like its on the tip of your tongue. might need deeper investigation.

i know i saw that movie, but dont remember much. certainly not the character name. but i remember it wasnt a comedy or anything funny. if im not mistaken it was a swedish film? maybe a lost in translation situation?

reply

In that case, probably the translator was just being cheeky.

reply

thats what i was thinking! but looking into Harry Hole and poking around shows some interesting things.....

Norwegian author Jo Nesbø was inspired by Harry Bosch! ok theres Harry! The surname "Hole" translates to "Hill" in English and is the name of a historic Norwegian town of Hole, Norway. The word is pronounced as two syllables, with stress on the first (HOO-leh)

yikes! thats some unfortunate naming!

Didn't work:
Pussy Galore from Goldfinger. Cheap joke. (sighs audibly)
President Merkin Muffley, Russian Premier Kissov, General Jack D Ripper, Major "King" Kong and Col Bat Guano
from Dr. Strangelove: Silly B Movie names in an otherwise brilliant and hilarious film. (sighs audible again)

😎

reply

However, the name Dr. Strangelove itself somehow worked.

reply

Yes, that one seemed to make sense. The others were Kubrick trying way too hard to be funny, but those names
were the least funny part of the film.

Worked
HAL 9000
Indiana Jones
Billy Ray Valentine
Dr. Phibes
Clark Griswold
Borat Sagdiyev

I'm on the fence
Truman Burbank
Ratso Rizzo
Travis Bickle

reply

The Third Man had strange names - Harry Limes and Holly Martins.

reply

Worked: Keyser Soze

Didn't work: almost all the characters in Jupiter Ascending. Just a lame attempt to imitate Star Wars.

reply

Worked: Ellen Ripley from the Alien franchise. Ripley sounds cool.

Didn't work: Tree Gelbman from the "Happy Death Day" films. What kind of stupid name is that?

reply

Maybe it's a Groot name.
