"Top" 3 best sitcoms
1. All in the Family
2. Sanford and Son
3. Soap
1. Seinfeld
2. Arrested Development
3. Police Squad!
1. Cheers. The writers went on record as saying they wrote it as if it were a radio show. Verbal humor is so much more difficult and satisfying than slapstick or situational humor.
2. The Larry Sanders Show. HBO/Gary Shandling’s satire of the big network late-night, post-late local news broadcast show is brilliant and hits every note perfectly. Stellar casting and character development. When did you last see Janeane Garofalo as a regular on a TV show? Yeah, Daria. And after that . . . ? The Hank’s Sex Tape ep is a classic,
3. Veep (the first 4 seasons). Same reasons as Cheers, though the showrunners never said shit about how they wrote it. It demanded the audience’s complete attention, and rewarded it. Outstanding casting, better than Cheers.
MOST HONORABLE MENTION
SMILF. Frankie Shaw is so talented that
I can’t describe it. Not a mainstream show. Innovative, raw, disquieting, profane, vulgar and gut-bustingly funny for its select audience.
The Mary Tyler Moore Show. “You’re gonna make it after all.” MTM DEFINED quality 60s sitcoms, and mopped the floor with the competition. Spunky, perky, GOOD Mary was not only as adorable as all get-out, she was a good person fighting for goodness in a news industry that was inclined to be anything but.
The Dick Van Dyke Show. Yes, the 60s. Let’s go back 60 years. A wonderful combination of physical humor (Dick) and wit (the rest of the cast), yet remaining a family entertainment, much like . . .
The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle. A Jay Clampett cartoon that was probably the most manic network TV comedy ever made. Adults and children convulsed in unison for completely different reasons. The show is that good. It had Boris Badinoff and Natasha Fatale as the antagonists.
