Is there any sound argument for giving a life sentence for non violent offenses?
It’s pretty fuckin ridiculous if you think about it
shareIt’s pretty fuckin ridiculous if you think about it
shareGive the death penalty instead of...eventually their lawyer will strike a plea deal to avoid it and the murderer will shockingly cough up the dead body in exchange.
Happens a lot...
Treason.
shareI am curious as to what non violent crimes would get life.
shareSome of these depend on the extent:
- Downloading underage porn
- Fraud
- Wiretapping
- Releasing personal information
- Harboring a fugitive
- Being a fan of the band Kiss
Yeah? None of those under any circumstances should constitute anywhere close to a life sentence.
shareYou say that until someone steals your personal information and frames you for stuff you didn't do or if someone hacked into your daughter's phone and released her nudes. And there's no excuse for being a Kiss fan.
shareHey! I like Kiss.
shareNo exceptions. Off to the big house you go.
shareIf he likes Kiss that much, he should be sent to the booby hatch instead of jail.
shareGuilty as charged
It was my environment!!
“ - Harboring a fugitive”
I DIDN’T KILL MY WIFE!!
Seriously though, a life sentence for that?? Way draconian, man!
If he's a murder, you're harboring someone who could very well murder someone again.
shareWell that’s a bit more specific, but still, I think there would be many cases where someone is manipulated by the fugitive to hide them, and I’m not sure if that deserves a life sentence. Seems a bit harsh to me 🤷♂️
shareThat's why I said in my original post "some of these depend on the extent". Harboring an illegal immigrant is one thing. Harboring a murderer is another.
shareEven harbouring a murderer might have extraneous circumstances to consider. Like I said, manipulation is a big one. What if it the person who is hiding the murderer is their partner who has experienced domestic violence and is in fear of their own life? Does that otherwise innocent person deserve to spend their entire life incarcerated for that? I personally think it’s low-end offending. Where’s the compassion dude??
shareNo, I agree with you. I'm just saying that there are times where the things I mentioned could warrant a life sentence. My exams were just general and would need a more nuanced discussion.
shareI don't remember ever hearing of this
What I would like to hear is a sound argument for releasing rapists and cold blooded killers...too many of these predators do it again upon release and unlike property crimes there is no way to make up for sex crimes or murder
pimps
shareDoes this happen ?
shareAre you joking? Do you have any idea how many people are serving life sentences without parole for drugs and theft?
shareIt's why I asked. A life sentence in Britain is only about 25 years and they will do half of it alot of the time then released.
It's very rare here to be given a whole life sentence without parole.
Tbh, it's one thing I admire about America. The judges don't fuck about with sentences.
It’s not admirable, honestly our justice system is horribly broken. Murderers do 2-3 years and walk, guys locked up for life on drug charges. It’s fucking insane.
