Why do car transmissions still have that stupid “D3” mode that no one uses?

If there is some stupid reason they need to have this, at the very least it should be off to the side and not right below drive and so easy to accidentally shift to. I am constantly driving and hear the high revving and realize I’m in that mode which I never use.

You seem to have problems with car controls. Perhaps you should buy this.

reply

Lol.

reply

A bargain at 2,200 euros!

It looks a bit hard to park though

reply

It's for towing stuff (boat, camper...) and is supposed to give better traction on snow
I don't use it either

reply

Ahh so you can go full speed towing a boat? I can’t go over a certain RPM.

reply

In most cases it’s not recommended to tow heavy loads in overdrive. The d3 button just keeps you in 3rd gear.

reply

I don't tow anything but I would say you should certainly not tow anything at full speed

reply

Man up. Drive a manual trans car.

reply

One of mine has a 5 speed with a granny gear. 😀

reply

Manual is more fun and powerful but the Auto trans is just so easy-peasy for everyday driving...I've owned at least 15 cars and only had two with manual trannies

reply

The cars I drive have no need for D3.

reply

LOL - My Miata is an automatic, (l-o-n-g story why I got it on this one, last one was manual), but it has paddle shifters, so you use the shifter knob to put it into a manual shift position and then shift gears on the steering wheel. Certainly not the same experience as clutching, but it can be fun.

reply

Yes, as you probably know I've got the BMW M8, which has the tiptronic paddle shift option or the auto function.

reply

Do you use the paddle shifter often? The only time I do is when I take my car out on some twisty country roads.

I think you only have 2 paddles on your car, where as I have 4.

reply

Yep! Just the two for me. I use them when I want to have a bit of fun!

reply

Don't you show off Andy!

reply

Vroom!

Sorry, one of my vices is driving /piloting fast things.

reply

Yeah I love to drive fast. I have to be a good boy now though, I only just got my licence back.

reply

I’ve had a few close calls. I miss my track days. Drive it like you stole it.

reply

Balderdash! The best system is the munkaphobic zaptoodle zingzong gear switcherupper.

reply

What about R2D2 mode?

reply

Beep boop...

reply

My Mini Countryman is a steptronic and doesn’t have a D3 mode, BMW kept it simple: put it in D for forwards or R for reverse.

Although quite why there’s both ‘park’ and ‘neutral’ bewilders me: they both do the same thing so what’s the point?

I can’t see a single reason why anyone would want to use ‘N’, if you don’t want the car to roll away at lights or something then leave it in drive and put the handbrake on and the car will happily sit there till you’re ready to go again.

reply

Well, gears are engaged in Park and they aren't in Neutral -so no resistance - like in a car wash or being towed.

reply

Neutral helps as a barrier between drive and reverse also. If you knock your stick into reverse while driving forward you can fuck the gearbox quicksmart. Most newer cars have that sort of step gear change where it would be near impossible to change gears by accident though.

reply

My auto has 1 and 2 below drive. I don't have a D3. Ive knocked it into 2 by accident a few times, thought my car was fucked lol. Reving out at like 30 k's. I never use the settings, I'm glad they're though though.
