Should adults be allowed to rate kids movies?

I always find it strange that parents complain about kids movies that their kids love but they don't... yet kids aren't going onto IMDb to complain about how boring adult movies are. This stuff is especially notable in the TV series... it's as absurd as rating a horror flick a 1 because you don't like horror movies.

reply

Well any adult that takes kids to see a movie has to watch it themselves. And if they buy a DVD or streaming ownership of a movie or TV show, they''re probably letting themselves in to be present for 200 viewings.

So ytes, seeing as adults decide whether to pay for kiddie films or not, they need to know how tolerable the movie is for adults, or if there's something in the movie they don't want the kids to see.

reply

So you're fine with giving movies like The Godfather a 1 because "is boring for kids".

reply

Way to miss the point!

Although letting the small children review "The Godfather" themselves might be kind of entertaining...

reply

What if the adult is still a kid at heart?

reply

Yeah, this 👆👆👆

The other thing to consider is how many children’s films are made with adult viewers in mind. Many of the jokes and references in most kid’s films would go over the heads of younger children. I think it’s obvious that these movies are made in the knowledge that all the family will watch them so I have no problem with adults rating them like any other film.

reply

Yeah, most of "kids" movies are actually family movies for the whole family to enjoy.

Real kids movies would be Teletubbies, Dora, Sesame Street, and various Elsa vs Spiderman stuff in Youtube. No adults are allowed to complain / critic those true kids movies.

reply

Yet adults DO complain about Teletubbies, they complain about anything kids enjoy but they don't.

reply

Adults just like to complain.

reply

"No adults are allowed to complain / critic those true kids movies."

Why not? Parents are the ones who decide whether to expose their kids to garbage or not.

reply

They can decide without complaining. Like, ok looks like Teletubies is not fit for my children, I would rather they see other kinds of entertainment. I'm not going to rate this.

And not wtf is this shit, it's so boring and repetitive, what a stupid show, only idiots would want to watch this trash, I rate 1/10.

reply

Why can't one complain about and rate a show intended for one's children? It's not like a 3-year old can write a review about the show being too repetitive. Parents are the ones who decide whether a show is suitable for their kids to watch. This shows are also made by adults, so it's totally fair to critique them.

reply

Because adult thinking doesn't represent how child think.

reply

Well, in that case adults shouldn't even make movies and tv shows for kids.

But who says a parent doesn't take that into consideration? Also, perhaps the parent takes issue with the kind of influence the show or movie has on their child.

reply

You're too extreme.

reply

You act surprised. I'm sure you've already been to my basement!💃💥

reply

Don't assume my age.

reply

The last kids movie I saw in theaters was The LEGO Batman movie. I’d have no trouble writing a review for it if I was a critic.

reply

I think there is a point to be made about adults watching children's movies and critiquing them. They need to remember that the movies are not meant to appeal to them.

Many adults compare modern kids movies to the kind of kids movies they watched when they were young, and wrongly apply the same criteria.

What todays kids find entertaining, funny etc is vastly different to what we watched as kids.

reply

When adults complain about kids movies even though these ones find them enjoyable, it's usually because those movies don't convey positive values.

Adults are not rating whether the movie is fun, but whether is contributes to raising a healthy person.

reply

"it's as absurd as rating a horror flick a 1 because you don't like horror movies"

That's only a fair comparison if those adults rate kids movies a 1 because they don't like kids movies.

reply

I think it can be done, but I think that to be a film critic there has to be some level of maturity to sometimes accept a movie for what it is.

I love Little Giants.
It holds a 36% on Rotten Tomatoes, because it's a formulaic jocks vs. nerds movie.
So what? If you can't say this movie is at least entertaining you are wrong.
