I just never liked the name of the band. ' Up Yours ' would have been much better than ' U2 '.

They can't be more hated than that dreaded band, "Nickelback". Ugh.

I like them but not as much as much as the U2 of the 80s and early 90s. Joshua Tree, Rattle and Hum, Achtung Baby. Maybe even a little from Zooropa or Pop.

Their hatred began in Ireland where artists traditionally didn't pay tax. They changed the law and made it a tax free threshold up to a reasonable amount and U2 said they were leaving.

Then the album that was installed in everyone's itunes account really pissed people off. Not just the fact that we couldn't initially delete it, but that its cover was offensive to conservatives as it showed two men in a sexual embrace.

Finally, the left leaning environmental warrior rubs people up the wrong way too.

Bono also tweeted "repeal" with a loveheart when Ireland debated repealing the abortion ban written into their constitution.

So he's done a good job pissing off a lot of people.

Musicians, just keep on making music. Doing other things unrelated to music using the initial popularity made by your band is an underserved fame.

It's the same as if a politician (say, a president or a prime minister) using their popularity and influence to market a mediocre music album. Even if it sell millions of copies no one would take it seriously.
