British music > American music. Who agrees?

I've always preferred English music over American and I don't even think it's close. Here are some (I've probably forgotten some) of artists who are considered legendary by many, as well as a list of some of the worst artists of all time. I honestly had a tough time coming up for bad ones for England.

This is just cherry picking and down to what type of music people like in my opinion. Both has some good and trash. Their are some very talented writers who are not well known in America as well.

reply

Absolutely not. And the Backstreet Boys are not bad (it's actually Swedish music, rather than American). I really learned to appreciate their music after the hype died down. And they're way better singers than Bob Dylan!

reply

I'm a better singer than Dylan. You should hear me in the shower.

reply

Yikes, do I really need to be in the shower for that???

reply

No. I've installed a camera in each corner. You can livestream it.

reply

Link, please!

reply

I agree. If you remove the doors most of my favorite bands are from England.

one point I'd like to make is the comparison of size and population.

In order
Pink Floyd
The Doors
Supertramp
Led Zeppelin
The who
Steely Dan
ELO
David Bowie
Black Sabbath

reply

Yeah, America has a much bigger population and I'm amazed how England can have so many great bands. Those artists I listed above aren't necessarily my favourite, but I just came up with a list of respected artists whether I liked them or not.

reply

I would also add how much more easier it is to be hurt all over the world if you're not in the American markets and if you're not touring America.

reply

America is a very good band from America

I like a lot of prog rock from the 70s and again most of it is from the UK

Illusion
Curved air
Fairport convention

reply

I like King Crimson and even to an extent Yes. Both from the UK.

reply

In most cases perhaps, but no British band can beat Blue Oyster Cult.

reply

Led Zeppelin, The Who, Black Sabbath.

reply

Good examples of bands that kill most American bands, but leave Blue Oyster Cult untouched.

reply

Well, the only way to be accurate in this assessment is to list ALL music EVER made from both countries. Your lists are woefully underpopulated. Please make complete lists so we can truly weigh the values. Start now and you should be done typing by Saturday. Include the scientific breakdowns of "good" and "bad" as well.

(On a more serious note, I have always been fascinated by the volume of quality music that comes from the UK)

reply

These bands were just from the top of my head. I think generally UK music is better and has less shit.

reply

>bands from the top of my head
>extrapolate massive generalization

Most of my favorite bands come from the UK but your claim, even with its convincing list, is a cherry-picked genre-specific snipe. Its a reverse engineered construct. What about jazz, blues, and (sigh) rap?

reply

Which rap artist would be considered among the greatest artist of all time? Some of the artists I listed have blues influences. I even had Aretha which is soul.

There is also a character limit on posts so I couldn't keep going.

reply

No idea. I don't know much at all about rap. I'm just saying that one can create lists to support personal taste/feelings.

Let me say that I pretty much agree with you but not the science.

reply

I'm not a fan of a lot of the artists I mentioned. For example, I hate Lady Gaga but put her on the good list because I know how people feel about her.

reply

My original post was light-hearted sarcasm. Now I feel like I have a red pen.

reply

I know it wasn't completely serious. I read the part in the brackets.

reply

In terms of rock. British music always had the harder edge than American music which tended to be more over produced.

Lighter/Top 40 wise I would say they are roughly the same. Although I think I like more 80's Brit pop than American.

reply

I'm not a fan of 80s music in general, but British is better that decade in general.
