Waitin' for the train that goes home, sweet Mary
Hopin' that the train is on time
Sittin' downtown in a railway station

Sleek women behind every door
Cost more than you got
You best be up if
You want some more
Cause if you don't
You'll be shot

Everybody wants to rule the world - Tears for Fears

80s

They don't write 'em like that anymore
They just don't write 'em like that anymore

Greg Kihn Band - The Breakup Song (They Don't Write 'Em.)

You made that too easy

reply

correct.

And you lack the one thing that is devotion
Not always there in your hair in a daze.
Just too mixed up in your own emotions;
Your vanity will always be your greatest thing.

reply

All right , all right, all right!!…

Moments like these is why i love this game…it’s a slog sometimes, a labor of love at others. I forget so many songs I liked and the bands too, and then someone here will post something and I’m all “hell yeah, forgot about that one.” Divine Things by the Soup Dragons is the perfect example!

Bravo, Lady S!

reply

You are correct

There's been time
I'm so confused
And all my roads
Well, they lead to you
I just can't turn and walk away

1970s

Burn the groove to death, kid
Nail 'em to the cross yeah, yeah, yeah
Burn the groove to death, kid
Nail 'em to the cross yeah, yeah, yeah
Till you're not a super pop star any more

reply

What a scary song kid
Never heard before yeah, yeah, yeah (repeat)
Soon the groupies will start rolling by your door

reply

Looks like I stumped the board with this one.

A few clues:
Big 70's band that became an even bigger 80's band (& IMO started sucking big time!)
Had one of the most influential, yet overlooked guitarists of all time (+ being a phenomenal singer) who tragically died accidentally way too young.

And some more lyrics-

Sock 'em in the gut, yeah, yeah, yeah
Don't you ever let your mama catch you crying

reply

Even with all the hints you've stumped me. 🤔

reply

Yeah, it is a bit of a "deep cut" (Though it does open their third album). Unless you're familiar with their non-hits, you probably won't figure it out.

Go ahead & Google if you must.

reply

Ah that explains it. I never listened to them. No reason why not. They just never really made it into my wheelhouse. I'm going to listen to the song right now though.

reply

OK spoiling it here since nobody has gotten it:

Chicago - Sing A Mean Tune Kid

Forget their radio hits of the 70s. ....& especially forget their power ballad hits of the 80s......THIS is Chicago at their best!!!

OK, one more clue & the rest of the lyrics-

The band's first 3 albums were double albums. Their 4th was a live QUADRUPLE album!

Play the bad song, kid
Everyone's the blues yeah, yeah, yeah
And the people never know you're only lying
