My girlfriend keeps giving me hints by leaving engagement ring magazines around.

They are called catalogs, and they are still pretty popular. In the jewelry business, a large percentage of their catalogs are requested by ladies to be mailed to their boyfriend. The guy is opening his mail thinking why am I getting these catalogs?
