I think hardcore fans tend to be the worst thing for any type of product. They will defend it even if it is absolute crap and of course the loudest voices are the ones that are heard.
shareI think the term "toxic fandom" is just a lazy way of trying to delegitimize certain opinions.
shareBarely anything to discuss. It's more of the same.
1. Company X converges¹.
2. Company X owns or uses its resources to buy some classical franchise.
3. Company X uses the franchise to spread wokeness.
4. Non-woke viewers and fans don't like being indoctrinated through classical franchises, so they criticize it.
5. Company X call those non-woke viewers and fans toxic.
6. Rinse and repeat.
Nothing new.

¹ Convergence is the situation when a company is infiltrated and eventually taken by wokes. Once that happens, the primary goal of the company will move from making money to evangelizing and spreading wokeness. Disney and Google are probably the two most known examples.
Toxic fandom is social construct!
shareI thought the term referred to overzealous fans that escalate fandom conflicts to harassment or start fights at a convention. It could also apply to fans that have a break with reality and start stalking the actors online or in person. That is a more fitting definition than just being critical of the writing.
shareThe hardcore Star Wars fans are far worse than the Trekkies.
