He's on The Late Show and says he went to 'Sydney hah-bah (harbor)' (impersonating the Australian accent) and recalled that when he was in hospital he nearly fainted doing stretching. He asked the doctor what's that about and again he impersonated the Australian accent, 'Because you have covid-19'. He says 'that's why you're the doctor and I'm the sorta celebrity.'

Really Tom? Some places in America like Boston don't really do the Rs in words either. Grrh.

This is why people think that some Australians have thin skins. So Tom Hanks made fun of the Australian accent. So what ? You think people didn't make fun of Hank's accent in 'Forrest Gump' ?

I hope he's a cool guy and was just having a joke. I just find impersonating accents for a laugh to be in bad taste. Even when people mock Trump for saying 'yuge' instead of 'huge' I'm like 'who cares? Some words are pronounced differently by different people.'

do you know josh szeps? i think he's become something of a big deal in australian radio, i believe.

anyway, he was on the fifth column recently (my favourite podcast - always a great listen), and had a lot of fun with the hosts playing around with australian stereotypes. listen around the 12 minute mark below for an example.

or the little exchange they have around the 55 minute mark is another very good instance.

That's a bone of contention, because we call them 'prawns' not shrimp. But had he said 'throw another prawn on the barbie' Americans would have been like 'excuse me?'

It’s taking jabs at someone, maybe more subtly than usual, possibly through the press, or I guess it can be ripping on or making fun of someone in some way. Cutting them down to size. All of the terms I’ve used here are much better than “Throwing shade”. Haha.

The first time I heard the term “throwing shade” it was from an internet article headline involving Kim Kardashian, and I immediately hated the term, much like I despise anything The Kardashians have ever done or said.

I told the girl I was with at the time about this term, and she said “it sounds like someone is throwing a lamp at someone else.” 🤣

I've found American's to be very insular people who tend to be unaware of a world outside the USA. I had an American girlfriend who would get offended quite often by my directness and straight forward humour. It was a chore.
