Social Media-Is it doing more harm then good?

Primarily facebook and twitter. I don't get on twitter but I do get on fb and it seems more often then not it's just people arguing.
Also, while I think it's probably good everyone has a voice these days, the idiots seem to get heard the loudest.
And I also think social media is making harder to tell what is fact anymore.

I remember before social media consumed everyone and it seemed like people were happier.

I don't like how easily topics can be overwhelmed by influences and influencers. Accounts don't need to be illegally hacked when all it takes is some nefarious troll to bombard boards and threads with ugliness and then have other entities piggyback and amplify the message to a point where people wonder whether it's a legitimate movement.
If I'm some borderline nutjob (like the Pizzagate guy but there are many more less dramatic examples) and I think the pendulum is swinging in a way that supports my aberrant vision, me and that many more people will be vocal about wanting representation when in truth, the great majority of people don't want to see this for our country.
But look at social media, the aberrants claim. There's the truth.

Pretty good summery of your activity in the politics boards.

Not being a FB user, I've always imagined there is some pressure to act as though your life is going oh-so pleasantly when the truth might be the opposite. If I posted on FB and shared my actual personal feelings about my life, somebody would probably suggest I kill myself since I'm wasting everyone's time and oxygen feeling sorry for myself. (I guess that's what depression is, excessive feeling sorry for oneself.)

Nah, that's Instagram. We all go there and post pictures that make it look like we are living happy and eventful lives. Facebook is for spreading misery through political memes, begging for attention by posting religious memes and asking for prayers, spreading hate and lies through fake videos and articles, or posting YouTube videos of all your favorite songs when drunk and alone. There are great hobby groups though, about the only reason I haven't deleted it.

I've always said, the smart phone will be the downfall of humanity.

Yes, I think social media does more harm than good when it comes to staying informed, as it allows everyone to form their own little echo chamber and reinforce their ignorance.

Facebook convinced me that I know too many idiots, and there are some nasty hate groups. Also some pretty good hobbyist groups. I only follow about 5 people out of how ever many hundreds are on my friends list. Most of them just post memes or fake news non stop. And I won't use messenger anymore because people send me unwanted recipes and political memes or tell me that someone died.

Twitter has a place I think. I don't tweet but when protests were happening in our city it was the best source for live updates on vandalism and police brutality.

Yes.
