Funniest director?

A combination of the movies and the person.

I go with John cassavetes

reply

Taika Waititi or Mel Brooks

reply

the coen brothers

reply

The director gets points for both? Yeah, I'll go with Mel Brooks, too.

If not, I might go with Woody Allen, Charlie Chaplin, Billy Wilder, Terry Gilliam, and the Coen Brothers. And, sure, Mel Brooks is still "in".

reply

There are some good and long interviews of Billy Wilder on YouTube.

reply

I'll have to look those up. I've read interviews with him. He was one of the sharpest writers of all time and one of the top directors.

reply

He co-wrote the amazing movie Ace in the hole which is probably more relevant today.

reply

It's a great movie. It also kinda shows that corrupt media hype isn't a new phenomenon.

reply

Right
. And media always has a financial bias. The one big difference is in the past the news division always lost money but it was considered a public good. But when Fox came along and started to make a lot of money the others followed their model unfortunately.

reply

I lament that Jon Stewart wound up being a Cassandra, warning everybody of the dangers of truth v. corruption, that the problem wasn't left v. right at all, and everybody ignored him and doubled down into clickbait and op-ed "replacements" for journalism.

reply

If only there was a left-wing in America.

John always played both sides of the fence. He had his little crossfire moment and then when he became guilty of what he criticized, he would constantly say they were just a comedy show. shielding for Democrats isn't what I called political satire. It should draw blood in a literate and humorous way that also is an x-ray of the society, while avoiding the trivial in the gossip.

reply

There is a left in America, they're just nowhere near the left of everywhere else. At least, in terms of party. As far as the general populace goes, there are plenty of left-wingers in the States.

I agree with Jon that he wasn't doing a news show. He was probably too light on the Democrats and/or the Left in general, but his show wasn't supposed to be delivering news. It was supposed to be mocking the system. You might argue he was too biased to do that to his full potential, but he wasn't trying to be the BBC, CNN, or any other news network. He was trying to be funny.

reply

The left would be talkin about the means of production and abolishing private. The Democratic party is another right-wing party, who focus on emotional and trendy issues to divert the fact that they've supported all these wars and all these bad trade deals and all the surveillance State bologna that the Republican support. .

reply

I agree, I think. The Democrats are to the Left of the Republicans (slightly), but to the Right of most of the rest of the world. There are lots of USAers (citizens) who are about means of production, etc., but it isn't there at a political level.

Mel Brooks

reply

John Landis is pretty funny.

Woody Allen, since Mel Brooks has been named.
