Why does it always feel sucky doing the right thing?

I bought a dress from Nordstrom on my Nordstrom card and a few months later, I got the bill and paid for it in full. Anyways, I never wore the dress and returned it (with tags) and got a store credit on my card. Since I never used the store credit, Nordstrom sent me a check for the amount of the dress and I deposited it into my account. Three days later, I got another check from them for the same amount; they accidentally sent me two checks. So, being in a moral dilemma, I decided to call them to let them know that they sent me another check by mistake so, they voided it. I really wanted to keep the money but, I wouldn't have felt right about it. Talk about feeling tempted. Temptation sucks!!!!! I'm curious to know what everyone else would have done in my situation; I promise you, no judgements here....

You did the right thing...you”re an honest person...I would’ve done the same thing....but I would’ve worn the dress once and returned, even though my hairy legs might have been a turn off for some...

I once put 500 on a prepaid card at 7-11...total of 503.95, processing charges and all....I gave the clerk 6 bills - 5 ben Franklins and a 20 dollar bill, change should be 16.05, she gave me 96.05 because she thought I gave her 6 100-dollar bills, she didn’t look closely and it’s 7-11 in Los Angeles so it’s busy....i thought, I’ve owned a few retails shops in the past and this ain’t right, darling...I kindly told her “you gave me too much, Please look again, at the bills I gave you....”
She was appreciative and some guy standing there playing the lottery was like, wow, that’s honest....I thought, okay, yeah ,I guess so, though didn’t say anything, just took my receipt, said cheers and took off...Honest, okay, I just thought it was right more the anything, I imagine she wouldve had to cover the near 100 dollar shortfall of the till with her own money....

Only if I didn’t have to end up shaving my legs as part of the bit, AK...I manscape, but not the legs, screw that...Feelin’ you, Andy the King! Python is wacky, my rider must say, “no razor to my legs!”

Bravo! You most certainly did the right thing. All these stores are struggling to keep going so they can’t afford to lose money on clerical errors. If they close down then people lose jobs.

Thank you!! That's what I was thinking too. I know a few Nordstrom locations closed down. I wouldn't have felt right about taking the extra money from them....

I would have done the same thing; you did the right thing. To me it would have felt sucky if I'd kept the money. I know how it feels to really need that extra money but it feels better to know you did things right.

Thanks; I really did need the money but taking money from a company that's struggling...I would have felt horrible....

It shouldn't "feel sucky." It's the right thing to do. We need more of this type of honest behavior these days.

I feel bad for saying this but, it was hard for me to give up that money; that was the sucky part. I know I did the right thing though. :)

Because there's no social recognition anymore. Values like honesty, integrity, professionalism... they're considered outdated, obsolete. Damn, even meritocracy is starting to be considered morally wrong nowadays.

It sucks because there's no social incentive.

My advice? Make it something that tells you apart from the rest. If doing the right thing doesn't get you social recognition in modern society, make it something that you know it makes you better than that society.

Another aspect of doing the right thing is this saying I like a lot:

"Ethics are about what you do when nobody sees."

Doesn't matter if doing the right thing goes unrecognized or your moral values go unpraised. You do the right thing because it's the right thing, sight unseen or not.
