Is it normal for people to make fun of how you talked in high school?

When I was in high school (and even in my early years of college), people made fun of the way I talked (such as mimicking how I said words, calling me "autistic", repeating what I said to another person in an amused manner, and so on.) I am wondering if this is a common thing you experienced.

reply

Was it friends just messing with you or was it bullies?

reply

Not friends, at least. They probably were bullies but it was a common thing in that school. I was quite a forgiving person at that time, though.

reply

Yes, especially if you are autistic.
It was the same among my group of friends, though we all made fun of each other in a harmless way. I rarely heard it from non-friends. In a way I'm thankful because it made me aware of some of my weird mannerisms so that I was able to fix them.

Also you have 2020 posts, nice.

reply

Haha...thanks!

I haven't been diagnosed with autism or Asperger's, though. I see what you mean with regards to your friends, however.

reply

Neither have I, but I was often accused of being on the spectrum. In reality, it was just plain old social anxiety.

reply

Same here.

reply

you just ruined it!

reply

Sorry!

reply

When I was in middle school and high school, it was normal for kids to make fun of you for everything. I’m sorry those kids were dicks to you. It sucks, but just be grateful you are not that kind of person.

reply

Thank you for the kind words!

reply

Nah, schoolchildren make fun of everything. They make fun accents, hair styles, even parents' names, etc. They're children. If adults make fun on you then they might have problems.

reply

Oh okay. Thank you!

Kids will make fun of anything that sounds or looks different to what they are used to. Of course if the person isn't part of a cool crowd anything they do will be up for mockery. If the kid is part of a cool crowd they can be as weird as fuck and it will just be accepted and even mimicked in tribute.

TL;DR Kids are sheep who are desperate to fit in and will make fun of others or copy someone in the hopes they are not made fun of themselves.

In college, they made fun of the way I talked a lot. But, I did not grow up speaking English, so I said a lot of things wrong.

reply

What language did you grow up speaking?

reply

A sharp, hard punch to the bridge of the nose does wonders when you are being bullied. They never expect it.

reply

i had an accent in high school.
