Just watching this on the news. The guy is doing the old and feeble thing. He is pleading guilty to avoid the death penalty. I should watch the HBO series based on Michelle McNamara's book who died before he was arrested.
I was around during his extended spree of rapes and murders. I remember visiting relatives in the Sacramento area in the late seventies, and it was hot (duh, Sacramento), and there was no air conditioning and they wouldn't let anyone open a window because there was a rapist/murderer on the loose in the area.
And ten years before that trick-or-treating was cancelled because the Zodiac Killer had threatened to murder a random child on Halloween night, so I had to go to some party with kids I didn't like instead of trick-or-treating. So horror of horrors, "The Golden Age of Serial Killers" caused me two moments of minor personal inconvenience!
Cali sure had it's overly fair share of maniacs!
Seems that serial killing is now on a downtrend but spree shootings are on an uptick...lock your doors at night and don't walk around town looking at your phone folks!
there's also a short doc on a guy who not unlikely was framed for the killing of a young girl in the early years, where the exeter PD was involved while the killer worked & lived there. he died after decades in prison, trying to clear his & his family's name.
