Vikings were in North America 500 years before Christopher Colombus

And I'm guessing others were there before the Vikings.

History isn't anything like people are taught.

Is this still even a secret at this point?

But the reason Columbus is relevant is he actually brought back information about the Americas to Europe. That, and his coming to the Americas had a lasting effect. The vikings just died out.

reply

True, I guess 'discovered' means more than landing there.

Captain Cook wasn't the first in Australia, but he mapped it and brought that information back to England which set up a colony.

He's the one they say 'discovered' Australia.

I've heard the Egyptians had trade with The Americas because some were buried with drugs that were from The Americas. Interesting.

It's an unproven theory.

"Mainstream scholars remain skeptical, and they do not see this as proof of ancient contact between Africa and the Americas, especially because there may be possible Old World sources."

WE DIDNT DIE OUT...

reply

Certainly didn't thrive in the America's either...

reply

A LITTLE PILLAGING AND RAPING AND THEN THEY HEADED HOME...THEY THREW ENOUGH SEED ABOUT TO LIVE FOREVER THOUGH...MY FATHER HAS ALWAYS TALKED OF BEING DESCENDANTS OF ERIK THE RED...A FEW YEARS AGO HE DID ONE OF THOSE GENE TEST THINGS AND PROVED IT...WERE BOTH LARGE GUYS WITH BLONDE HAIR AND RED BEARDS...I HAVE A RARE NORWEGIAN EYE PIGMENT CONDITION...SO NOW IT MAKES SENSE I GUESS.

reply

Very cool. My grandmother immigrated here from Sweden and so I'd like to think I have viking blood as well. But the furthest we could back in our genealogy is the 1600's.

As for the Vikings they certainly did alot of that to their European neighbors but not really at all in the Americas.

I read the entire article but other than a few possible skirmishes there is no mention of the pillaging or raping of Native Americans.

Obviously there were confrontations but it certainly doesn't look like the Vikings were wrecking havoc on the Natives.

reply

UNTIL RECENTLY IT WASNT PROVEN THEY WERE EVEN EVER HERE...JUST FACT THAT THEY MADE IT THAT FAR IMPLIES THERE IS MORE STORY LOST TO TIME...IM UNDER THE BELIEFE THAT THE VIKINGS MADE MANY TRIPS TO MANY COASTS MANY TIMES..THERE ARE NORSE MARKINGS ALL OVER AMERICA..HISTORY JUST HASNT CAUGHT UP YET.

reply

Who knows! I love reading about viking sagas and am also curious about the pieces of history not well known!

reply

I'd love to know what really happened to the vikings in Greenland in the 14th century.

reply

It is not, it has been published since the 1960's.

reply

The Big lie!

reply

If America was really woke they would give back the land to the natives.

reply

They'll ask for donations first.

reply

Yeah, and the Native Americans had already been here for tens of thousands of years.

Columbus didn't "discover"the Americas, he just brought them to the attention of the crowned heads of Europe.

reply

Some say there were people in North America even before that, called Native Americans.

reply

This is true.

reply

i always think about how gnarly it must have been taking those primitive boats across entire oceans in various conditions...

reply

Humans related to the Australian Aborigines and Papua New Guineans were in the Americas tens of thousands of years ago.

reply

They landed in Newfoundland, my home province.

reply

Looks like a nice place. But I could imagine people feeling isolated living there. It reminds me of northern Scotland.

reply

very much like northern scotland.
