Films ruined by sequels

Was there ever a film that you felt was disrespected by the bad or awful sequel(s) that followed it?

I BELIEVE THAT SEQUELS HAVE NO BEARING ON THE ORIGINAL...IF ANYTHING THEYRE GOOD FORTHE ORIGINAL....IF THE SEQUEL IS GOOD OR BAD...IT DRAWS ATTENTION TO THE ORIGINAL.

reply

That's true, but...

When the original movie is part of a bigger plot arc, the original movie can be ruined by the sequels. That rarely happens, since those movies are rare (to start with), and even when you have them, it's the same team the one that makes the whole pack (LoTR, for example).

It's much more common in TV series. A textbook example would be Game of Thrones. The first seasons are amazing. The last two seasons are pure garbage. Since they're part of the same story, the last seasons actually ruin the whole series, first seasons included.

SOLD...I CAN SEE YOUR POINT THERE...AS AN OFFICE FAN ,THE FINAL SEASONS SANS MICHAEL SCOTT ARE FAIR COMPARISON TO PEOPLE'S REACTIONS TO GOT'S FINAL SEASONS.

reply

Yeap. Sometimes it can be "saved", though.

Dexter is a good example of it. The ending of the 4th season works perfectly as a series ending (it was the original planned ending). If you don't like the last seasons, you can pick only the first 4 seasons and call it a day. Sometimes you have a point in the series that works as an ending and closes the story. But that's not always the case.

The Matrix.

Just joking! The Matrix never had any sequels.

reply

The Matrix was never good enough to be ruined by another film, as well.

I like sequels for the most part, since they have a lot of comedic value and they extend the OG film's longevity. However, some that seem to have been made unnecessarily include:

Jurassic Park sequels
The Blair Witch Project sequels
Halloween sequels
The Karate Kid sequels

I'm not sure if they ruin the originals, but The Gate 2 and Troll 2 are both terrible sequels to two movies that are 80's horror fun.

reply

Speed, definitely Speed.
Speed 2: Cruise Control was one of the worst films ever made. It didn't really ruin the original, but it definitely disrespected it.

Highlander
Nightmare on Elm Street
Iron Man
Heavy Metal (although the unofficial sequel "Love, Death, Robots" is good)
Ghost Busters
Starship Troopers
