normality or normalcy?
which do you use?
sharenormality sounds better.
shareI prefer 'normalcy' but I'm not sure if that's correct
shareWhen Warren G. Harding used "A Return to Normalcy" as a presidential campaign slogan in 1920, he was roundly slammed by grammarians who insisted that "normality" was correct. The grammar geeks lost that round, Harding won the election, and "normalcy" entered popular usage.
And why the hell that bit of useless information stuck in my memory when I can't remember the names of co-workers or where the hell I parked today, I will never understand.
LOL, don't worry too much
We all seem to do this sort of thing
That’s exactly how I operate.
shareYes, "normality" lost the election, and yet "normalcy" won in the long term, as a replacement word (for many) for "normality", and as a kind of substitute for "normal", or maybe the status quo or, for some, "the good old days".
I almost never use "normalcy", a word I learned very early on not to use; and an example of a U.S. President making a made-up word a part of the English language; or the English language as spoken in American. For what its worth, I've learned to live with it.
Normality

shareThey appear to have slightly different meanings. Anyway, I use normalcy.
