What if you were hired to be a house keeper and you cleaned the house one day as instructed. And your boss (the house owner) left you and said you could just leave after your done. Upon completion you locked the house up. Then the next day they show you a locksmith bill. As it turns out they were locked out of their house of 20 years. And now they expect you to split the cost. I asked why they didn't have a key and they explained they had some elaborate system in place, but somehow I messed that up by locking up the whole house. Are they justified in asking me to split the locksmith cost?

reply

It seems you didn't have the key neither. How did you manage to lock the house?

reply

It was locked from the inside.

reply

Well, I'd say you shouldn't pay.

You're supposed to make a reasonable informed decision. If he had told you not to lock the house, then that'd be your fault. But he didn't.

Without specific instructions, the reasonable assumption is to lock the house once you leave, otherwise you could be hold responsible because some burglars entered the unlocked house.

reply

This ^. Who wouldn't lock up a house that isn't yours upon leaving in that situation? Unless the person specifically told you to leave it unlocked.

reply

was it?

reply

MY MOTHER CLEANS HOUSES....THATS INSANE...I WOULDNT FEEL RESPONSIBLE AT ALL.

reply

Split the cost and then key their vehicles.

reply

👍😉

reply

I’m sad my advice will be ignored.

reply

Maybe not. It isn't the kind of thing you want to announce.
But I would be very tempted.

reply

I would announce it on here. Probably wouldn’t tell the story and mention my fantastic solution on Facebook though.

reply

No, I would not split the cost. Locking the house up is the typical, responsible thing to do . They could have held you responsible if you hadn't locked the doors.

I think they are 100 percent responsible for it because they didn't let you know about this elaborate system they used instead of a key, which is the norm. I think they were being unreasonable expecting you to leave the house unlocked despite not telling you about this. This whole story about an elaborate system sounds dubious to me, anyway. Do they always leave a door unlocked when they aren't home? Maybe they just forgot the key and made up something about an elaborate system to give them a reason to blame you.

reply

And not only the doors. Unless told the opposite, any responsible cleaner is gonna check that both doors and windows are locked before leaving. Usually she's gonna open the windows the moment she arrives, to air out the house, and she'll lock them when she's leaving.

reply

What a great movie that would be

reply

It would be perfection if somehow it were also about pants.

reply

You turned me down for a date so you’d be seeing that movie without me.

reply

What? Do you have amnesia or something, Bucky? We had the date, and I *thought* we both had a great time! Apparently only I did 😭

reply

How about a second date then? *shakes magic 8 ball* all signs point to yes ! 😊

reply

Of course! Magic 8 ball always knows 😊

(Dammit, I'm not getting all of my notifications. Are you?)

reply

I always have bad wifi in my building. It sucks cause I pay so much for internet. I also sent you a message . Sometimes it takes like 15 minutes after someone sent it to me to receive it

reply

Wha? You sent me a message and I didn't get that either? Man, I hope I'm not unintentionally offending a lot of people. Sorry about that 😬

That does suck. Are you in a condo, and did they make the walls out of some kind of wifi-impenetrable substance? 😠

reply

It’s ok ! They’ve tried and tried to fix it. So I just deal with what I’ve got. I use a blue hard line (giggity) for my computer and PlayStation, it’s the phone wifi that is the only problem . I have unlimited data with my phone plan so it’s fine

reply

Right... not getting your messages

reply

Hmm. IT'S A CONSPIRACY!! The Illuminati must be behind this. Damn their eyes 😠

reply

Dam them for ruining our second date !

reply

captainbucky, regarding the movie, please make sure that the following oldie by Jay and the Americans is in the soundtrack ...
Let's Lock the Door (and Throw Away the Key) - https://youtu.be/Z7r837r_EoU

reply

What kind of idiots don't take the house key when they leave?! Tell them, very nicely, that the next time they leave home they should make sure the key is firmly and securely JAMMED UP THEIR ASS!!

And that should take care of the problem 😃

reply

You shouldn't have to pay. It depends on how badly you need that job and how far you're willing to go to keep it. If you think you can stick to principle and keep the job, do it. They are at fault. If they will fire you for something that's their problem, that's really their problem.

reply

that is pure balderdash.
if they have some elaborate system, it's on them to say so, and not just say 'leave after you're done.'

nuts to them.
