funnily enough, i was just revisiting the original track the other day. i've never quite gotten on its wavelength, never quite got what it was that everyone thought was so immortal about it. but playing it the other day after listening to a long podcast on the history of the byrds on headphones cranked up high, i kinda heard its greatness for the first time. still wouldn't rate it too highly on my list of great byrds tracks, but i get it now.
oddly enough, even though i was a pretty big husker du fan (best album new day rising imo) i've never heard their cover. will give it a listen while reading this afternoon, probably.
