recommend a movie, book and song

i almost re-watched the latest star wars movie this morning, then stopped and realized 'there has to be approximately 8 billion more enjoyable, worthy things i could watch.'

so i'm crowd-sourcing my entertainment options & asking people to recommend...

1 a movie
2 a book
3 a song

...that you think people probably won't know, or if they do know it, one that you feel isn't appreciated enough.

The Searchers 1956
Reclaiming History by Vincent Bugliosi
God Only Knows - The Beach Boys

reply

i read the bugliosi book about 5 years ago. a complete doorstop, a brick of a book, but worth the time.

for someone who doesn't need something quite so comprehensive, gerald posner's book will work as a less imposing compromise.

i watched the searchers about 20 years ago, but really should revisit it sooner rather than later.

reply

both books are great.

i love what sean baker does. i saw take out last year when it was on kanopy. unfortunately i think it's been removed already. i really liked it, though not as much as his recent stuff.

reply

yeah, I think we went back and forth about Baker this film once before.

Movie: Over The Edge (1979). This was on HBO a lot back in the day but not many people know about it now. Teen rebellion film with a great soundtrack and also Matt Dillon's film debut. 12-13 year olds smoking dope yet still somehow innocent, unlike another movie called Thirteen in which the main kids are, frankly, little shit heads.
The kids in Over The Edge rebel because their parents move them to a planned community with nothing to do.

Book: Over The Edge of the World-Magellan's Terrifying Circumnavigation of the Globe- Just a gripping book. Told thru the diary entries of a crewman or journalist named Pigafetta (his role alludes me but it's not really important) It was the first time in human history a sailing crew went around the world, complete with stories of meeting savages, discovering new species, and all of the other trials and tribulations a crew during the Age of Exploration went through.

Song: I'll go with something definitely off the beaten path. The artist is Bassic and the song is called Incantation. Find it on youtube. Very creepy sounding. It would be perfect as the opening song for a horror or science fiction film, or even better in an end of the world movie.

reply

It wasn't an essay question.

reply

Explanations are better then short answers.

reply

True.

reply

And I have a lot of free times on my hands.

reply

Equally as true.

reply

I’m voting post apocalyptic vibe on the Bassic track. Good stuff. 👍
