Robert Downey Jr without Iron Man

You guys all know by now that Dolittle flopped hard.

But everyone here is focusing here on RDJ if he will go back to the MCU because of this or if he is a one hit wonder that he can’t do well as an actor without that role.

And I was wondering do people really think RDJ is just Iron Man ?

Sure it’s one of the most important roles of his career, he spent 11 years with that franchise and was so good in that Role that it’s the first character we think of him but ughhh..

I don’t think he is done without Iron Man, people are so overreacting just Because Scarlet Johansson and Chris Evans did great Right after they left But I think he still has a chance to recover and Do other great stuff.

Sure it was a little hurting for His rep as an actor that his first film right after the MCU wasn’t successful but it’s just one and has a very good career behind him and two Oscar noms to support his credibility and very good performances behind.

It’s sad people think he will go back to the MCU just because he didn’t do very good with one film afterwards.

He stepped off the mountain. Now he has to find his footing again. I think he'll be alright. Isn't there a new Sherlock Holmes coming soon.

reply

Yes there is a new Sherlock coming up and I hope it’s really soon so everyone forgets about Dolittle.

Anyway I’m still gonna see Dolittle because I’d watch him in anything but yeah let’s hope he moves on into his next movie soon, preferably Sherlock Holmes

reply

I didn't like the Sherlock films. I see RDJ as more of a supporting actor, a good supporting actor. He did well with Iron Man but I think that will be it for him.

reply

After all the money he made as Iron Man, I was surprised he went for the money over a better choice in projects than Dolittle.

reply

Maybe Doolittle was intended to just be a filler project. Nothing to be taken seriously.

reply

That's also a factor to it's flop in my opinion. People just automatically think that RDJ won't take his role and the movie seriously so why bother watching it.

reply

I'd go with the 20mil pay day more than that theory. I understand when an actor who didn't have a huge career gets a nom then takes every project to cash in immediately -- but Downey already has bank. He could've opted for a serious role instead. He has the chops. People forget that Iron Man was a departure.

reply

The reason RDJ has given all Reporters to to do this film is, doing a film so his kids could see and take them to the premiere.

What I find it more strange is that he thinks the MCU is not very suitable for them, there are a few in the franchise with some mid violence but nothing I wouldn’t let young kids to watch.
Probably I’d doubt a bit with the First Iron Man but other than that I think all the MCU films are very kid friendly.
Maybe Thor Ragnarock is also more suited for teens but all the MCU films are very kids friendly.

reply

$100 million is a hell of a budget for filler. Maybe they thought his status as Iron Man would fill cinemas regardless of what crap they put him in?

reply

And whoever thought so lives in a different Time, Actors no longer sell tickets to any movie that era is over. They can’t get away with it anymore.

reply

I agree but Hollywood is always very slow to catch on to what the riff raff are thinking and wanting.

reply

That’s true as well, otherwise the Oscars would have stopped being being on tv long time ago well 6 years ago. the last good ratings were in 2014 when Ellen hosted for a second time.

They are still fighting for those ratings and keep them alive but they just don’t get it. People don’t watch tv anymore, no matter what they do. People don’t care about the Oscars because they stopped watching tv.

I still watch them but it’s the only time of the year I watch tv.
I only watch it for the Oscars,The golden Globes, the World Cup and the Olympic Games.

Hollywood needs to understand two things.
1 stars don’t sell movies anymore, no matter how attractive or talented an actor is they won’t sell a movie just for their name.

2 The Oscars are outdated I’m still sort of nostalgic about them but the televised show ended its golden years in 2014.

I got bored with all awards shows back in the 90's, I noticed they had little to do with talent and a lot to do with who sold more tickets/albums or just who was more in the clique.

I also hate how they drag everything out so much. If I want to know who is nominated and who won I can just Google it now. I think that might also play a factor in decreasing ratings, people who want to know can take the short cut.

Add in political rants, boring celebrities and "stars" and you don't have much left of appeal.

The "Star" thing or lack thereof is an interesting one. I love older films like from the 1920's to 1950's I tend to start losing interest in the 60's and 70's. The 80's & 90's not bad for pure unabashed entertainment.

Anyway, the stars of the 20's to 50's had a real screen presence, not all of them were necessarily great actors, some weren't very good at all. But they had that aura about them. I think the scripts tended to be better as well and the stories were more engaging. It all plays a part.

These days I am more likely to avoid a film with a big name attached, Cruise, Kidman, Clooney, Crowe among many others. I would dodge the bullet because of them rather than take a chance because they are in the film.

the 90s or maybe early 00s is when i got into the all awards thing. But to each their own and still watch them even though they are not a big thing anymore.

Again more than the real show of the Oscars is the technology which has ended with these things, as you say people now watch who won on YouTube and googling the information.

With the stars system I’m much more optimistic but not the sense that’s it’s not over more like it’s not such a bad thing that happened.

I think if you care for movies for just the pleasure of watching them then it’s for the better.

We see more actors getting roles in the part they fit instead of being cast because that name sells tickets.

That’s lack of the movie star system is why had the chance to get a perfectly fine cast in the MCU and why we had Rami Malek who almost no one knew as Freddy Mercury.

I think we have more quality films Because of that. Most studios and film makers have learned that can’t get away with making a bad movie but selling thousands of tickets because certain actor is in it.

And that is sadly why Rom coms we’re murdered that sub genre depended a lot in the movie star system and when that was over the Rom Coms too

I'm wondering if the internet has killed the star system. As in robbed the "stars" the mystique they once had? There were always gossip rags of course but it was still controlled to some degree by Hollywood. Now you have the internet with sites like this and the riff raff (myself included) get to voice our opinions on films and stars.

It's like the story of the Emperor's New Clothes, you have all of us sitting in the crowd screaming "The emperor is naked" when Hollywood would prefer us to think otherwise.

You are right though, a good film will be good with a talented unknowns in it. Rom Com's, some of them were pretty clever and funny, I would suspect that something like My Best Friend's Wedding for example would have been good and popular with unknown's.

Hollywood needs a creative revolution. A new breed of people who want to make entertaining films, drop all the forced political agendas they love to cram in the movies and find some talented unknowns and just start again.

Good writers too with original ideas.

I don't think a return to the MCU is in the cards in the near future. Dolittle was an odd choice. I don't see its failure hurting his career in a meaningful way.

Hour long interview with Joe Rogan.

Already watched it and it’s really good. I really liked what said on the MCU and how much he loved the character to the point of saying he doesn’t want to comeback due to the respect he has for the character.

As much as I loved him in that role and I don’t think in any way is beneath his talent. I don’t want him to come it would take off some of the importance of the arc of Tony Stark and I do believe he can do other very good films.

reply

As mentioned, he is good as Sherlock.

However, here is the issue: RDJ played Iron Man as HIMSELF.

He ad libbed a lot of the lines and so that's HIM as Iron Man, what he would say as Tony Stark, with some loose character stuff thrown in.

Jack Nicholson does that in every movie. What if Jack was a cowboy, a mobster, a therapist, etc and that was his whole career. Jack never played a Russian astronaut coming to grips with cancer, he played himself as whatever.

RDJ isn't famous enough to do that.

So, if he wants to get famous for other things, he must play characters that aren't like him. If not, he will be playing Stark in a bunch of cheap movies only the character will have a different name.
