Movies you will never watch.

We all have a movie that we will never watch for any reason. Mine is "Southside with You" (2016)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4258698/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

I don't know how anyone could think that a movie about Barack and Michelle Obama's first date would be something people would be interested in. I wouldn't even watch it for free.

ishtar

reply

Maybe I'd watch it to see how bad it is.

reply

Hustlers (2019)

reply

Good call.

reply

Hustlers was pretty good. I think it is worth a watch.

reply

Once Upon a Time.... in Hollywood. Here's why....

I love both lead actors. A lot. But not enough to watch this. No matter how good or how bad it is, I refuse to watch it. I feel that the Tate-LaBianca murders was one of the most horrific things to have happened in modern American history that, unless it's a genuine docudrama, making a dark comedy which involves The Manson Family and Sharon Tate in any way is extremely distasteful. And I don't care how it was handled or what fantasy scenario Tarantino came up with. To put their story into a dark comedy is just plain wrong to me.

reply

I wonder if many WWII veterans didn’t watch Hogan’s Heros because of the horrors of the POW camps.

reply

I'm sure they had their protests about that as well and I'd wager that very few of them watched it. And I wouldn't blame them one bit.

reply

It would be an interesting thing to research.

reply

If you don't mind me spoiling the ending to "Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood": It's actually more distasteful than you think. In the film Sharon Tate doesn't even show up to the house and get murdered. Instead, the killers show up at the house where Brad Pitt is there. He kicks their asses, including a guy with a flamethrower, and saves the day. Sharon is unscathed and the movie ends.

Honestly, you're not missing much not watching the film. It's just a serious of vignettes that go absolutely nowherre. I don't understand why it's getting so much praise.

reply

You didn't spoil the ending because I care so little about this movie that I didn't even bother to click on your spoiler. That's how much I'm not interested in watching this movie.

reply

Sounds like a standard Tarantino film full of violence with zero storyline and the sheep go nuts over it.

reply

Yes.

reply

Believe me, if it didn't have the Sharon Tate/Charles Manson storyline in it, I would've jumped at the chance to see this because I love Brad and Leo.

reply

There's about five minutes of actual violence in the film.

Just quietly I don't think it's fair to refer to people as sheep because they enjoyed a movie you think you're too good to see, or because they enjoy the work of a popular director. I like Tarantino because he makes entertaining movies, not because anyone else told me I should.

reply

ITS AN AMZING FILM THAT TAKES REAL EVENTS AND TURNS THEM ON THEIR SIDE....GREAT FILM..Q.T.'S BEST IN A LONG TIME/.

reply

I'll definitely give it a go.

reply

Because if critics really said how awful many modern films are, the industry would be in real trouble. I mean, more trouble than the videogame industry has already put it in.

Perhaps most of them are simply not even capable of realising how bad such a film is. Tarantino has been repeating the same crap for years and years, I would not watch the film either, both because I find the concept offensive and because he's been treading water since the 90s.

reply

i understand where you're coming from, and i'm not out to change your mind, but i don't think it's accurate to call once upon... a dark comedy. it's actually a fairly melancholy film imo, one that's very wistful & sentimental for a time that's past. it has comic moments for sure, but that's not the dominant tone, i think.

i loved it myself, think it's tarantino's best film and one of my favourites of last year.

again, i get your position, and i think that's perfectly fair on your part.

reply

All Quentin Tarantino movies have black comedy in them. Like I said, the subject of Tate-LaBianca is so incredibly tragic, that unless it's a genuine docudrama or a documentary, it should never be used in any movie, let alone a movie that contains dark comedy.

reply

again, i'd only push back on calling the film a black comedy.
it has elements of that, as his films always do, as you said.

but it's not the dominant tone.

i found the film's ending genuinely moving. the only time in his career tarantino genuinely touched me, in fact.

for whatever it's worth, sharon tate's sister said very complimentary things about the film.

happy posting to you, regardless.

reply

That's fine if she was able to get something out of it. I never will.

reply

More tragic than the millions of Jews exterminated during the holocaust April? QT also took that tragic situation and added his own wish-fulfillment in Inglourious Basterds, placing us all in an alternate universe where we can cheer and rejoice for what might have been.

I do understand where you're coming from and respect your wish to never see the movie, but rest assured Tarantino treats the memory of Sharon Tate very respectfully. The final scene is one of the most beautiful and bittersweet I've seen, and that's all down to the genuine affection Tarantino makes you feel for Sharon.

reply

I only watched very little of that as the subtitles were too small and I didn't like the dark comic aspect of the Holocaust portrayed in it. And if you read my original comment more closely, I said that it was "ONE OF" the worst modern tragedies.

reply

All good, like I said I respect your wish not to see it. I'm just not sure it's quite as offensive as you imagine. The actual attack by the Manson "family" is a very small portion of the film and they are very much made out to be the losers of the story. Although there may be comedic elements to the film, no one is left laughing at Tate's actual fate. Totally the opposite, in fact.

reply

As I said in my original comment "I don't care how it was handled or what fantasy scenario Tarantino came up with."

reply

Ok then, thanks for the conversation.

reply

So if the movie showed the slaughter of Sharon and the others would you watch it??

reply

If it was a true docudrama based on fact, I would watch it. I would hope that those scenes would be handled with tact. But if they weren't, I would probably look away if those parts were overly graphic.

reply

My wife was willing to watch it when I told her it was alternate history. She cried at the end.

reply

I’ll never watch La La land

reply

I refuse to watch this too. I hate musicals.

reply

Why not? It's a great film, entertaining and with really good performances. You should watch it.

reply

I like the actors but musicals are a turnoff for me.

reply

I watch the first five minutes but I’m sorry; people jumping out of their cars singing crappy songs with fake smiles and cheap dance move turns me way off.

reply

Hahaha! Being a theatre kid, I wish my life was like that. I mean how awesome would it be to be able to sing your feelings instead of really having to feel them? And then, to have a big moment, I don't know what right now, but just one of those moments where you really have something to say, and you say it in song, and everyone around you joins in in perfect harmony with some awesome choreography. Yeah, that would make me happy.

reply

That's also when I turned it off.

reply

Rough start right? Yikes!

reply

Maybe I'll give it another go one day, but yeah that start just made me cringe.

reply

Me either!

reply

same here

reply

I honestly can't think of any movie that I will never watch.

reply

From Justin to Kelly? Can't Stop the Music? Norbit? Gigli?

reply

I might watch those at some point, if I feel like it. I have seen some "bad" movies that I ended up enjoying (Plan 9 From Outer Space, Cats, Troll, Troll 2, Catwoman).

reply

You definitely have to watch Can't Stop the Music. It's an autobiographical film about the Village People and it stars Bruce Gender -- I mean Jenner -- as a lawyer. Everyone is bad in it, it's horribly directed, the costumes are ugly, the writing is laughable and the movie is just unnecessary.

reply

Loved Norbit!!!!

reply

Have you seen Zombie Nation. Highly recommended!! 👍👍😉😉

reply

No, I haven't seen it. I will have to check it out.

reply

If you're able to get through it all, please post your thoughts about it on it's board!! 😆😆😆😆

reply

No but the IMDb score makes it sound enticing.

reply

It's used to rank at #4 on IMDb's bottom 100. 😁😁😁😁

reply

i guess i wouldn't watch almost any mainstream romantic comedies. this is probably a bit of an exaggeration, but i feel like i'd rather die than watch your typical julia roberts rom com. take eat pray love, for example. i can barely type that title. i can't imagine watching it. it seems like the kind of film that would make god smile and say 'well wasn't that just lovely,' while the devil would vomit in disgust.

reply

If Ryan Murphy's name is attached to it, I'm already out.

reply

I just hope your not a devil worshiper

reply

i just figure the devil has better & more interesting tastes!

reply

Alexander and Brokeback Mountain. For the same reason - it seriously creeps me the Hell out.
Two hairy asses spooning... Uh-hunh. That's a hard hell no. Just can't see it, thank God.
And when it came to Alexander... they pissed me off; I went to experience the genius of his military strategy and instead had to watch him flirt with his boyfriend in front of naked Rosario Dawson.
Slight exaggeration on the last bit but not much. You get my point.

reply

I haven't seen Alexander but Oliver Stone made, like, five versions for it.

reply

Aw, Brokeback Mountain is an excellent film, and there's not one hairy ass in sight! I get that the subject matter makes it an unpalatable watch for some, but it's definitely one of Ang Lee's best movies and Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Williams and Anne Hathaway are all in top form. The cinematography is something to behold too.

I'm not convincing you am I? lol. Never mind, I suspect you are not the only person who refused to see this because of the gay thing. That's just the way it goes.

Alexander, on the other hand, is pretty terrible in every way. Never mind the man on man flirting, if you ask me to take Colin Farrell seriously in that ridiculous blonde wig or not question why Angelina Jolie is playing his MOTHER, that's a big no from me. Oliver Stone was in way over his head with that colossal mess.

reply

The sex in the movie was not the focus at all. It was about complicated relationships and heartbreak. Very moving film.

reply

I don’t think I could ever watch Manchester by the Sea. I heard it is a total sob fest. Not interested in crying for 2 hours or more...

reply

It's not so bad.

reply

Manchester by the Sea is a contender for best American film of the last four/five years so would urge anybody to check it out... it's a tough one to watch at times but has its hopeful notes, too. Certainly not a wall-to-wall weepy.

reply

i agree. it's very sad, but it's not oppressively emotionally manipulative.

reply

It didn't have to be manipulative. The story was gut-wrenching on its own.

The scene near the end with Williams and Affleck brought tears to my eyes.

Not a movie I'll re-watch soon but a fine film nonetheless.
