Thought it would be cool to get MC's opinion on who should win the big ones. Thanks to einstein, as I just copy and pasted his list. Any snubs that you want added, I'll add into this OP. "+" will designate the one's that I've seen so far. "*" will mean it's my personal choice. Vote totals will be at the end, in parenthesis.

I really want to see 1917. I've probably been looking forward to it the most, and I'm typically not a huge fan of war films.

I was making a prediction. I saw it today and thought the plot was weak. It is still worth seeing and wonderfully shot.

Yeah, I saw it last night, and I agree. I'd say it's worth one viewing, but it doesn't feel like it has that "rewatchability", for me, like other films of the genre.

If politics have clouded your judgment to the point where you can no longer appreciate the art of the performance, why even continue to watch films?

Well, I was fairly certain that I had seen you participate in the "everyone in 'Hollyweird' is an evil, leftist pedophile" line of talk, and assumed that was why you took on the attitude of "nobody gives a damn". I would say that many of my views don't align with the views of many top actors, but I don't let that affect my opinion on their work.

Now, if I'm completely wrong in this assumption, then I totally, fully, wholeheartedly apologize, but something tells me I'm not, seeing as I said, "Any snubs that you want added, I'll add into this OP." If you didn't enjoy any of the nominated performances, I totally understand, but if you genuinely didn't enjoy ONE SINGLE PERFORMANCE in the ENTIRE YEAR, again, I must ask - why even continue to watch films?

And I stand on what I said. I love Hollyweird's films, but I hate Hollyweird. What part of that do you not understand? It's a simple concept, but apparently beyond your ability to reason.

And, still, to the overall unanswered point - can you name one performance of the year that you enjoyed? Hell, I'll give even more leeway - can you name one actor, ever, that you have liked?

Yes, I enjoyed Joaquin Phoenix's masterful performance in Joker this year. He's a jerk IRL, but also an excellent actor. And I could name dozens of others from past years, but I don't owe you anything, so I'm not going to waste my time.

I never said you owed me anything. I just wanted to see if you've ever actually enjoyed an actor's work and/or an actor, or if life's other functions prevented you from doing so. That's all.

Despite your question being rhetorical, I'd still like to let you know the answer. Yes, I am happier than I was before. Just that one little answer shows me that there's more to you than just politics, and that makes me happy. And, I appreciate your answering, instead of ignoring, because, like you said, you don't owe me anything.

That said, why should I "go away" when we're making such progress? Our little exchange here has already been more enjoyable and more productive than the entire plot of Marriage Story.

Unfortunately I can't play because I haven't seen any of these movies/performances, but I'll sit on the sidelines and watch.

I should have watched some of them sooner. Now I'm trying to cram them all in before the actual results. Though, to be honest, I think I'm more interested in what MC thinks more than the Oscars. I was hoping to get more outside-the-box snub picks that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Joker was the first superhero/comic book type of movie that I've seen since Tobey Maguire's Spiderman, as the genre just really isn't my kind of thing, normally, but with my admiration for Joaquin's skills and interest in Phillips doing a (mostly) non-comedy, I couldn't resist, and I'm glad that I didn't. So far, of the ones that I've seen, it would have to be my #2, behind Parasite. Oddly, the two films have strong similarities in certain themes.

I'm like you. Not into the superhero moves, although I did enjoy Tobey's Spiderman, which is the last one I saw.

I want to see Joker because from what I understand it's an amazing opportunity for a great character study, and I like Joaquin, so want to see what he does with it.

I'll have to read the plot of Parasite, but it's probably not my jam.

What makes you say that about Parasite? If it's the title, it's entirely metaphorical. It's not actually about parasites haha.

Well when you put it that way ... 😂. I like Tobey, and wasn't that the beginning of the tsunami of superhero movies?

It was the title, but now I see it's Korean, and while the premise looks interesting, I can't do subtitles.

That's a great point. I believe you're right about that being around the time that the onslaught began. Superhero movie fatigue was probably the case for both of us.

That's a shame. You just don't like subtitles or...? On a related note, I did read that there are already plans on doing a HBO series based on it, so maybe you could enjoy that.

Superhero movie fatigue, for sure. I watched the 2nd one, and enjoyed it too, but by the time the 3rd came out I thought Okay, I'm good now.

It's very difficult for me to enjoy a movie when I have to read the dialogue to understand what's going on. I can't lose myself in it, or watch the actors to see the delivery of their lines. I might enjoy an HBO series of it.

Totally understand that. I find that with Korean and Spanish films, especially, I have to back it up to catch some of the visuals that I missed due to reading the text. Then again, I almost always do this with English films, as well, just to make sure I'm really grasping everything, so I guess that's why it's never really been an issue with me. I'm sure, to most people, it would be very annoying to watch a film at my house lol. Thankfully, the Mrs. doesn't seem to mind, and neither does the dog - my typical viewing party.

Thanks to Mad Men, I generally keep CCs on now. But I can understand most of the dialogue without reading them, so I can focus on the actors. It's for when I miss a line or word I think might be important.

It'd probably be annoying to watch a movie at my place too. My dog is as patient and long-suffering as yours and your Mrs are :)

I don't know which film the Hollyweird Pinheads will name best picture, but imho, it's 1917. It's a very intense story with amazing Cinematography, especially during one mesmerizing and surreal night scene.

I finally saw it yesterday. I enjoyed it, but it didn't surpass Parasite, for my tastes. There were just so many "who would do that?" moments, but I kept reminding myself that these guys were young and inexperienced. It was very successful in making me feel for the characters, though, particularly when the friend dies. How he sat with him and talked him through it. Also, when he told his brother, at the end. I thought that guy's acting was great, albeit brief. I'd give it a solid 7/10.

That's why they make pistachio and rocky road. And I agree, those were very powerful scenes, as was the night scene.
I give it an even more solid 8.8.
