Films that leave you not knowing who to root for
Was there ever a film that left you rooting for the wrong side...or one that left you not knowing who to root for?

shareIf there is ever a moral dilemma in movies about whether to risk the many to save a few, I always go for the many. The movies always seem to go for the few though. Examples of this are 2012 with the fat guy who puts the survival of the human race above all else, while the main black guy is more on the emotional side and wants to safe as many as possible, even at the risk of killing everybody in doing so.
And if there's ever a character in a high stakes scenario who's selfish and only looks out for himself and his family, I'll root for him. I suppose both of these show my philosophy, which is look out for number 1 and number 2, and the rest are replaceable. Examples of this are the black guy from Escape Room and the protagonist in Train to Busan.
Marriage Story is a film that's known to be divisive on who you root for, I and others I know rooted for the guy while I know a lot of others were rooting for the gal.
Joker (2019)
shareI dont think it's a given that all movies should give you someone to root for. Sometimes the most despicable characters in movies can be mesmerising
and compelling to watch.
Joker would be a good example. He is not a likeable character, though there may be times where we feel sorry for him. But he is a fascinating and compelling character to watch.
Yes. In the original King Kong, I rooted for both the natives and Kong. A bunch of Hollywood hot shots venture into dangerous foreign territory inhabited by primitives, completely overstay their welcome, then decide that they're going to shoot up a bunch of natives for kidnapping Fay Wray. Later, we're told to hate Kong for going on a rampage, when he was the poor bastard that was brought to NYC against his will!
Also, Bonnie and Clyde. After learning the truth behind these two and the rest of the Barrow gang, I root for law enforcement whenever I watch the movie.
Lastly, Silence of the Lambs. I feel like rooting for Hannibal Lecter at times, even though I'm not supposed to.
