famous directors you've only recently begun to discover?

Which famous directors have you only recent begun discovering their work? Also, how you liked his/her work so far and whether you intend to follow up with them or not.

Mine include James Ivory (Howards End), Francois Truffaut (The Bride Wore Black), and Peter Bogdanovich (The Last Picture Show). I quite liked Howards End and I thought The Last Picture Show was downright excellent, but I couldn't really get into The Bride Wore Black.

I'm still keen on following up with Truffaut, though, as he's made a bunch of other films that sound really interesting to me. Bogdanovich is certainly a director I'll look out for, but I haven't found anything in his filmography that really catches my eye at the moment. As much I liked Howards End, I don't have a whole lotta interest in seeing James Ivory's other works. His movies sound a bit too Oscar baity for me.

What about you?

I never heard all of those directors you mentioned, therefore they are not famous.

reply

You're joking, right?

reply

Lets pretend that the French new wave never happened, or The TV Series The Sopranos, and who ever said that Oscar nominees or winners were considered famous.

reply

Sure, because directors that aren't from today or whom make movies without $100 million marketing budgets should never count. Obviously, to people who truly love cinema, only the likes of Joss Whedon and J.J. Abrams matter.

Go fuck yourself.

reply

Wow! read between the lines guy, I was agreeing with you, by saying that famous people are people who make an impact within an industry. Since I clearly know who each of them are as I referenced things about all of them, without even looking them up I might add.

reply

That's the limitation of communicating through text online. The subtleties of voice intonation, facial expressions, and body language get lost along the way.

I apologize for that. My bad.

A few months I started to get into Rainer Werner Fassbinder. He's made a lot of movies and they're pretty hard to find.

reply

Cool, which ones did you see and how do you feel about them so far?

reply

I've only seen "Ali" and "The Bitter Years of Petra von Kant". I liked them both and I love Fassbinder's direction, but I've had trouble finding his other movies.

reply

A lot of his films are currently available on the Criterion Channel streaming service.

reply

The last thing I need is another streaming service.

reply

Criterion Channel is the best streaming service. It is totally worth it. What streaming services do you currently have?

reply

Netflix and Dazn. Gotta watch my sports. But I still have my cable.

reply

I have Netflix, Prime, Shudder, Disney+, Apple tv+, Crave and the Criterion Channel.

reply

and you still buy movies?

reply

Yes, I am a movie maniac!

reply

are you paying for apple and disney or are they still free previews?

reply

I pay for Disney+ but I get Apple+ free for a year because I bought a new iPhone recently.

reply

You're rich, Allaby.

reply

No, I'm not rich at all. I just love my movies and entertainment.

reply

What do you watch on Dazn??

reply

Premier League and Champions League.

reply

both of those disappeared from TSN and Sportsnet.

reply

That's why I picked up Dazn. Now I only have TSN and SportsNet for hockey and occasional Jays games.

My recommendations for the OP's three 'new discoveries'...

Bogdanovich - The Last Picture Show may be the greatest American film of the '70s IMO. I'd also highly recommend Paper Moon and Saint Jack.

Truffaut - My favourites are Small Change, Day for Night, The 400 Blows, The Wild Child and The Last Metro. I have yet to see The Bride Wore Black.

Ivory - While I like Howards End, I prefer A Room With a View, Maurice and (most of all) The Remains of the Day.
