Recommend me an animated Japanese film.
Nothing with Miyazaki because I've seen a lot of his. I want to expand past him. I've also seen 'Grave of the Fireflies". I prefer the darker films.

I was into anime big time long ago. It lost me, though, so my recommendations are old.
1. Ninja Scroll: Never mind the bad flavor the word "ninja" has. This movie is epic. Seriously fantastic.
2. Akira: Watch only the subtitled version (or the first dub instead of the 2nd if you must)
3. Ghost in the Shell: Even the series that followed has its merits.
4. Highlander, Search for Vengeance: Same guy that did Ninja Scroll and the only Highlander movie that is any good since the first.
5.Cowboy Beebop: A series but short. See this before they butcher it with a live action remake! It is unique and steeped in style.
