They finally admitted that "the rise of skywalker" was fan service

They are so clueless it isn't funny.
“Look, sure, it’s fan service,” the editor said, “[but] if you didn’t service the fans, it would be, ‘Oh, he didn’t go along with the history of ‘Star Wars’ and what it all means.’”

How were Han and Luke ruined?
Sure, it looks like $1 billion easily. More than I predicted.
Let's see...Han abandons his wife and the noble cause of the Resistance to run around playing smuggler again. Luke abandons his sister and everyone else, including the noble Resistance, to sulk on an island. And that's after he almost murders his own nephew because he thought he might turn bad. Decides the Jedi, guardians of peace and justice for 20,000 years, are worthless and need to die out.
I took it as Han was always a scoundrel and kept on making deals $$$...Han did his thing, I liked him for it and it was fair to the character
Luke killed his father and The Emperor in a battle he should have lost... I think we'd all flake out too
Characters change during great storytelling. Han began as a selfish, greedy criminal in "A New Hope". By the end, he risked his life to save Luke and has become a hero. At the end of "Return of a Jedi", he is so unselfish that he's willing to give up the woman he loves if she'll be happier with another man (not knowing Luke & Leia are siblings), volunteers to be general in a suicide mission, became honest and completely loyal to his close friends.
Disney wrecked Han's character arc by making him even worst than he was at the beginning of "Hope" because now he abandoned his wife and child, the cause he fought for, and is a low-level criminal again which at his age is just silly.
Luke didn't kill his father. Vader was imprisoned by the darkside. Luke set him free. The story is about redemption and how Luke never gave up on the possibility of his father becoming good again when everyone else had given up all hope. Luke indirectly saved the galaxy when Vader kills the emperor. That’s why Luke, Force ghost Anakin, Ben and Yoda are smiling at the end of "Jedi". Good has won.
Disney SW attacks and undermines the original story. Bringing back Palpatine was stupid and lazy writing and makes Vader's sacrifice for his son worthless.
Not just "Rise", but the entire sequel trilogy had no story, continuity, logic, character development, and as this editor admits, was a careless rush job which was poorly edited to just make a few quick dollars. Lucas was about the art. Disney is about the buck and it shows.
Watching this mess is the equivalent of witnessing a fool defacing the Mona Lisa by painting over it with a toothy smile.
I agree with all you said except for Lucas was about the art. If he's all about the art he wouldn't sell it to Disney. Lucas was all about the money, not the art. Or if you meant the art of getting helluva lots of money the easiest way, then yes he's all about that particular art.
shareThe reason why I said he's about the art, not money:
Both trilogies were experimental. The OT had innovative and groundbreaking SFX and sound system. Quality SFX, music, actors, writing, art design, directing, storytelling, etc. was a first serious "B-movie".
The PT was groundbreaking CGI SFX, first CGI character, first digital major motion movie.
He had innovative companies like Pixar which he sold for less than they were worth. He could've had billions more.
He turned down money from networks by refusing to allow SW on TV, videos etc. He believed they should only be watched on a large screen, not a small one. Many years passed before he would change his mind. We still don't have the original OT on DVD.
You may disagree if he succeeded, but he took his time with the movies, video games, to give us the best quality. Even the DVDs were innovative because he was the first to pack them with content which others followed. That takes money which he didn’t mind spending.
He said he wanted merchandising rights to manage quality control of toys, etc. I believe him because he's such a control freak. Compare Lucas merchandise to the cheap Disney SW crap.
Selling to Disney: He expressed unease at doing anymore experimental films because of the harsh backlash the PT received, 70 years old and is mortal, he thought Disney was an innovative artistic company - they were but decades ago, had a baby, wanted to do other things like philanthropy.
He spent his own money to make all the SW movies except the first one for full control.
He is now a philanthropist who has spent $1 billion of his own money to build a museum. He's agreed to give the $4 billion he received from Disney to an education foundation. He also has given away many millions to different charities and organizations each year.
His treatment was in a different direction from what I read. Art is about creativity, originality and boldness. Disney doesn't have the guts.
Well said. You explained it much better than I did.
shareThanks.
I guess I'm venting because I'm sickened by what Disney did to SW.
It's the worst case of creative malpractice that I can imagine. I'm sure George Lucas is sickened also and he must regret selling it now.
share"All those Star Wars films ... I loved them, I created them, I'm very intimately involved in them, and I sold them to the white slavers that take these things and uh, and ... [laughs]"
I bet you're right.
And you wonder why I've denounced these dumpster fires and refuse to watch them or consider them canon?
