It's worth it, you'll be glad you did. The patches help a lot too.

Vaping is bad though.

Cold turkey is the hardest way but the best. The first month is the worst and if you can stay off it for a year you've got it licked.

I agree that it takes a year before you realize that you are now completely and truly a non-smoker. Don't misunderstand - that doesn't mean you will be plagued by urges and life will suck. It just means appreciate that at certain points throughout that year you may feel some overconfidence and can have "just one."

After that initial tough 24 - 72 hours, it can actually be not bad because you will be full of motivation. Once that beginner's motivation eases off, that's when you might become overconfident that you can smoke in a controlled way. Don't do it. Get that year.

Recognize your triggers to smoke. Some common ones are after a meal, during a work break, after a period where you can't smoke (such as being in a movie theater), and driving a car. There may be others such as doing something that you feel has earned you a reward (such as finishing some housework).

I would also recommend to quit vaping. Good Luck. It is so worth it.

Don’t forget...after sex! Why? 🤷🏼‍♀️ I don’t know. It just seems sex and a cigarette afterwards are synonymous.

Whenever you see someone else smoking or a cigarette ad. I quit in the 90's after a rather long history of smoking European cigarettes on and off which I used to like, or thought that I liked.

In the time since I never wanted to smoke, but about 3 times I have just tried a cigarette and it did nothing for me, which was very nice. I could not take more than a few light puffs before I had to put it out, so I know I don't have to worry about it now.

my father quit back in the 1970s and became a eating machine.

reply

vaping is just as expensive sometimes and it doesn't help you quit but it's cleaner at least

reply

Quit the Vaping also.

I'm no expert but I find the best way to stop a habit is to pick up another habit that is less serious. Try clenching your hands into a fist or something like that whenever you get the urge to smoke and make that your new habit. Also, if you get the urge put all the things you hate about smoking before you think about what you love about it.

You decide what you want more in life...the cancer sticks or ??. For me the first time was back in ‘66. We moved to S. Florida from the Orlando area due to my husband working in construction (I-95). Our expenses doubled so we were poorer than church mice! With a lot of guilt today I didn’t quit smoking when I became pregnant. Cloth diapers were used back then and even though the rental house had a washer, it didn’t spin! I had to wring by hand then hang on the clothesline. That got old fairly quick!😡 I needed a washer! Where could I find the funds? My goal was set as I decided to put my daily cigarette money into a drawer in order to make payments on my beautiful Whirlpool washer. 😍 After 18 long months the washer was paid off...and I bought a pack of cigarettes! 🙇🏼‍♀️

The 2nd and final time (never to look back) was in the early ‘80’s. We had moved back to Florida from Texas which resulted in a huge pay cut (he worked in the oil business when the oil crisis occurred). We used our funds to buy 5 acres with the thought of building a house. Trouble was he was without work for many, many months. The house became a dream so we bought a mobile home for the land. After 5 years in the mobile home I wanted a house! What to do? Quit smoking again! I tried the patch, but it didn’t work. I was one of those smokers who was so addicted, I not only used the patch I also continued to smoke! To quit I chose a different route by using the same solitary cigarette each time I wanted a cigarette. When the urge hit I would light the thing, take two drags then snuffed it. I continued doing so until I couldn’t hold it any longer. But, egads by that time the darn thing tasted and smelled like an ashtray! 🤢 I had taken a very big step toward my second time goal of quitting the darn things. I fought the urge...and the house won! Never lit another one after that nasty stinking one. Sorry about the long tale, but I wanted to let you know it’s not easy to quit. Decide what you want most.

Starting one drug to get off another is a little ironic to me.

reply

Actually it's the same drug just a different delivery system with vaping.
