Probably true, but keep in mind they are talking about THE store manager, not the army of assistant managers. The store manager is the top dog of the store, responsible for EVERYTHING, which can be very stressful in a retail environment. The store manager also typically earns an annual bonus based on the store's performance.
I briefly worked at a Radio Shack and the store manager got an annual bonus that IIRC was 1% of the stores annual sales.
It's not a job I'd want. Walmart supercenter stores are huge, and is a supermarket grocery store in addition to all the merchandise they sell. As the store manager you are responsible for far more employees than your typical lawyer of dentist.
A store manager of a busy McDonald's probably earns $100k. It's not a job I'd want.
My cousin worked at a busy McDonalds and he told me the manager never got more than 40 hours per week, and only made $10.. So before taxes, $400/week comes out to $24,000/yr.
I think if the labor brings in billions of dollars, they should make a living wage. Its so bad for Wal-Mart that the employees have to go through hoops and ladders to get some food stamps (which they then spend back at Wal-Mart).. Then again, our government is always giving trillions in handouts, but only to the rich companies who put them in power.
Dentist seems like the medical sweet spot, nice income but 9-5 hours. There are specialists that also do well on 45-50 hour weeks but they are fewer in number.
I worked for another major retailer for many years. For a few years I processed the store's payroll. The store manager was making this much ($175K) 20 years ago.
YUP...THATS ABOUT RIGHT...DONT FORGET THERE IS BUT ONE STORE MANAGER PER STORE...AS A PAST EMPLOYEE IM ALSO AWARS THAT STORE MANGERS ARE MOVED FROM STORE TO STORE AT WALMARTS DISCRETION...ANYTIME YOU COULD GET SENT ANYWHERE.YOU ALSO DEAL WITH EVERY SINGLE THING IN THE WHOLE NIGHTMARE THAT IS YOUR STORE.
i don't think that's far-fetched at all.
i worked for a canadian chain that has stores of roughly equivalent size & sales, and while that's more than what they would make once performance bonuses are factored in, it's not that much more.
it seems like the right market rate for managing a store that size.
