What does "American" mean?

Sorry for what might be seen as a click bait title but I am really curious about this and couldn't think of a better way to phrase it.

A lot of films and songs have "American" in the title, a lot of the time the film being set in America is all that ties it to the title. Also a lot of the time the film could be set anywhere for all it matters.

A film like "American Beauty" could have just as easily been set in France for example.

So my question is using the word "American" just a way to attract attention or a bigger market or does it actually mean something that myself, as a non American is missing?

its marketing

That's pretty much what I figured.

It's just an easiest title when the moviemaker can't think of something better. The Departed can be easily titled American Gangster while being a remake of a Hong Kong movie.

Even worse is American Animals. The movie is about a bunch of amateur thieves that tried to steal a book about American animals. That's so contrived. What if the book they happened to steal was History of Belgium. Will they title the movie History of Belgium? They just want to have the word "American" in the movie to add the hype for a mediocre product which would be none otherwise.

The same with "Project" titles for movies, games, products, etc. Project X, The Florida Project, Project Cars, etc. Stupid names.

Makes sense, the simple answer is usually the most accurate. I was just wondering if there was more to it which there doesn't seem to be.

Also... "French Beauty" doesn't roll off the tounge as easily.

AMERICAN MEANS BETTER.YOURE WELCOME.

Could it? French suburbia isn't exactly the same.

reply

could have been set in Canada

reply

I honestly don't know that much about Canadian suburbs.

reply

They are the same as the US. This is why so many so many movies and TV shows are shot in Canada while claiming to be set in the US. You just change a few signs.

reply

Okay, but do they have the same reputation? A kind of facade of the middle-class?

reply

I would say no. This facade reputation is a Hollywood invention.

reply

Watching all those murder shows on ID one would think there's some truth to it!

reply

With more people moving to the suburbs there is bound to be more crime. From my perspective, they are very safe. At least where I live.

Overall the story of a depressed, emasculated husband with an overbearing wife developing a fascination for the hot young woman is a pretty universal story. Sure, if you set it in China/France/Australia the culture would be different but the basic premise still works.

reply

It's also very much commentary on middle class life in the suburbs.

reply

it happens in all classes and cultures.

reply

I think it could have something to do with the American Dream, or lack thereof.

reply

It means the story takes place in America, or it has Americans involved in the story. I don't think I could explain it better than that.
