What are some really good suspense thriller movies, post 1990?

My favorites:

Shutter Island
Identity
Primal Fear

reply

Get Out
The Skin I Live In
El Cuerpo/The Body
La Cara Oculta/Hidden Face

El Cuerpo has one of the greatest plot twist ever.

reply

Most of the movies that you have mentioned are in Spanish. Unfortunately, I don't speak Spanish :/

reply

Me neither. I don't know if you ever heard of,but there is something called SUBTITLES.

reply

If you're gonna watch thrillers in Spanish, watch 'el secreto de sus ojos'. One of the best movies I've seen.

reply

I did, ofc. 10/10. Fantastic movie. And that ending. Again, one of the biggest shock ever. Masterpiece. American remake wasn't bad, neither was close to Argentinian original.

reply

I want to watch and listen to the movie and not read the movie.

reply

Woo.wooo.woo.
That's kind of selfish.
What about people who are not speaking English?

reply

This was a response to " I don't know if you ever heard of,but there is something called SUBTITLES."

reply

Check Korean thrillers, they're top notch. 'I saw the devil', in particular, is a bloody masterpiece. But you have quite a few other ones that are very good too.

reply

I saw the Devil was an amazing thriller
'Masterpiece' fits here

Oldboy
The Chaser
Mother
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance
Lady Vengeance

Many more... S Korean thrillers are great

reply

Well, I saw the Devil and The Wailing are my two favorite SK movies.

Anyway, let's agree to disagree XD. Everyone has its own rank, and anyway, those movies are extremely good to say the least. I could disagree about the exact ranking, but they're top ones, that's sure.

reply

I usually avoid watching movies in foreign language unless they are dubbed. But I have watched 'I saw the devil' and yes I gotta agree it is one of the best thrillers I have watched.

reply

If you liked it, you have a few very good Korean thrillers to queue. It's easy to find 'best korean thrillers' lists on internet. This list (for example) looks fine to me:

https://asianmoviepulse.com/2016/02/20-highly-recommended-korean-film-thrillers/

I'd add two more movies that you're not gonna find in those lists: The Wailing and Train to Busan. The Wailing is a mix of thriller, horror and supernatural. Train to Busan is a zombie movie. Both are really good. In the case of The Wailing, DON'T read any info or spoilers. The less you know, the better.

---

With regard to dubbing, I wouldn't recommend to watch Asian movies dubbed. European languages and Russian can be dubbed between them quite easily, but Asian languages have a completely different range of intonations, more related to social hierarchies. When you watch them dubbed, the characters look like they've gone nuts.

reply

Well thanks for the list. If you have to name one or say two movies which one would you name? (I have already watched 'I saw the Devil' and 'Old Boy'.
The Wailing and Train to Busan? Or something else?

reply

Well, most people would recommend Park Chan Wook (director, OldBoy and both Lady Vengeance). His movies are more about raw violence than about intrigue. If you love Tarantino, you'll love him. I don't like him that much, though, but here I'm going against the flow.

I'd recommend Na Hong Jin (director). From best to worse, watch The Wailing. If you like it, watch The Chaser. The Yellow Sea is good, but not as good.

In general, Korean thrillers use either to focus more on violence, or focus more on intrigue and pathological psychology. I like more the second group, but that's a personal preference. Inside that second group, a couple of personal choices: Confession of Murder and the Children.

reply

I am in the second group too. I guess I will start with "Confession of Murder"

reply

If you like them, add 'Memories of Murder' to the queue (it's a different movie from 'Confession of Murder).

reply

Added! Done !

reply

hey guess what ? I found out that there are two movies with similar name released in the same year.
"Memoir of a Murderer" and "Memoirs of a Murderer"

reply

"Confession of Murder" was gooooood!
'Memories of Murder' is next in line.

reply

The final twist is brilliant. You get used to those twists, but that one, I didn't see it coming at all.

With regard to 'Memories of Murder', I had no idea there was another movie with the same title. This is the one I was talking about:

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0353969/

reply

What?? There is a 3rd movie with that name?

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5729348/
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5882982/
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0353969/

They all have good ratings on IMDB. I guess I found ourselves two more movies to watch. Cheers!

reply

Nice. The one from Shin-yeon Won looks promising. Thanks!

If you have to name only 3, which ones will will be your pick?

reply

No Country
Hateful Eight
Mulholland Dr.

reply

I have watched "No Country for Old Men " and yes it is one of my favorites.
I haven't watched "Hateful Eight" yet. I guess I will.

As for "Mulholland Dr. ", I was a kid when I tried watching that. There was a scene where a scary looking face just appears on the screen and I was so scared I did not ever complete the movie. lol

reply

Frailty (2001) is the best on that list. Amazing movie.

reply

Frailty had a great cast and was a fine thriller

I still miss Paxton, that guy was terrific in everything

reply

The 90s are the decade of the thriller! Too many to name them, really.

Se7en
The Usual Suspects
Abre los Ojos
Enemy of the State
Presumed Innocent
Basic Instinct
The Fugitive

reply

Presumed Innocent or Abre los Ojos?

reply

I personally would say Abre los Ojos (which Vanilla Sky is based on), but since you don't seem to like subtitles, you could just as well go for Presumed Innocent.

reply

Alright, thanks.
