A great doorstop novel?

James Clavell's "Shogun"

reply

Any James Michener book.

Gravity's Rainbow

reply

Ha!
I just now finished watching The Last Samurai (03) and thought about the Clavell novel:)
An excellent book, worth a re-read👍

reply

Very similar stories.

reply

Absolutely
And I get a giggle out of the 'stranded white dude becomes a total badass in a strange land' genre too😆

reply

As politically incorrect a genre as one is likely to find.

reply

Roger Ebert called it 'the great white hunter syndrome' LOL

Rambo wiped out the VC...
Jeremiah Johnson decimated the Crows...Cruise became an awesome Samurai in 6 months...
It's like the sudden appearance of a raggedy white dude makes every local forget generation's worth of experience in the area

I love this stuff😬

reply

I never expected to like The Last Samurai but it was quite good.

reply

Oh yeah, it's really very good!
Without spoiling I thought the final scenes were a copout but I get why it went down that way from a narrative perspective

I would have preferred the ending I was being sold on the whole time though...

Swan Song
It
The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich
A Song of Ice and Fire

reply

Its been a long time since I've read Swan Song, but I think it would make a good movie.

reply

Indeed.

reply

Lonesome Dove
The Count of Monte Cristo
Gone With The Wind

reply

I always thought so
It has some similarities to The Stand (end times, huge colorful cast...)

reply

Randall Flagg like bad guy with some supernatural abilities.

reply

He was bad, bad man!

reply

I used to love those old Post Apocalyptic novels - before the genre became mainstream.

Alas, Babylon
Lucifers Hammer
Earth Abides
On The Beach

reply

I sometimes wonder if the global economic implosion of 08 has something to do with a decade's worth of 'end times' pics, zombie shows and dystopian young adult films

08 really beat a lot of people up...

reply

I haven’t read it yet but isn’t War and Peace a very long novel?

reply

the gulag archipelago
