Do you ever use Pluto TV?

For a free service it's pretty cool. If I didn't have cable I'd probably use it pretty often.

Right now I mostly use it for the Unsolved Mysteries channel. Just nothing but UM episodes 24/7. I love it.

The only downside is that since it's free you have to deal with commercials.

I do sometimes when I see something I don't see offered anywhere else..Same goes with Tubl and a few of the other free services. And I have cable and Amazon and Netflix and another site where I can stream most anything.
I'd love to drop cable, though, if the rest of the household would let me so I'm always checking out alternatives..
The thing with the ads is that sometimes they forget to put them in and the ones they do have tend to be brief unlike Network and basic cable channels.... that have almost become unwatchable.
I have plenty of time to do chores watching AMC or FX..

Tubi is the better of these free services imo.

I've watched Midsomer Murders on there from time to time, but it's only the old shows with John Nettles. I also find the occasional movie here and there. I noticed that too, about the commercials being fewer. The breaks seem to run about four or five ads rather than what, 15 on regular TV? I also noticed their timing is bad - they don't catch the logical break for the commercial. The next scene gets interrupted mid-sentence sometimes. Then, when they come back from the break, they seem to back it up to a couple of seconds to make up for it. I don't understand why they can't get that right. It's rather jarring at times.

Regarding the commercials, it's probably a matter of time and manpower. Right now I know the way it works is that they just have a software program automatically drops commercials in at certain intervals. I guess if they wanted the commercials at specific points then they'd have to have a human go in for every show and movie and make a conscious decision about where those commercials are going to go, and I bet they just don't have those kinds of resources at this point.

But yeah, it's annoying for sure.

I've used it in the past, there were some good channels but I'd agree with Hownos that Tubi is the better of the free services.

Regarding Pluto, I object less to the insertion of commercials than I do to the fact that it seems to be the same commercial over and over and over and over again. At least it was a few months ago when I last used it. They need more sponsors.

reply

Never used Pluto, but that was my objection to watching a show I loved on AMC's web site -- the same commercial over and over.

reply

I mean if I don't want to buy something after seeing the commercial once, I doubt seeing it an additional 17 times will change my mind. And if I do want to buy after seeing it once, the additional 17 times are just wasted lol

reply

You never know, the 37th time might be the charm! πŸ˜„

It is aggravating. Commercials aren't much fun to begin with, but when you see them endlessly repeated, 😬

reply

I've never used it, it sounds similar to Crackle and Tubi, both of which are pretty good

I'll certainly give it a try

reply

It's similar in that it provides free, ad-supported programming, but it's also distinctly different in that it tries to replicate the linear nature of cable TV. While there is an OnDemand section of movies and TV shows, the main product is a series of channels that operate just a like a television channel: You flip to that channel and drop in on whatever movie or show that's playing.

Sounds interesting...I'm not home now and wont be for several more days but I'll check my Firestick when I get back to NY

If it's free it's for me😁

reply

Cool. Well if you do, drop back in and let me us know what you think.

There's also an Android/iOS app and you can get to it on a laptop just by going to pluto.tv.

The company was recently acquired by Viacom so I expect they'll be making some changes to the service and perhaps sprucing it in up in the coming months.

Tried it but didn't really like it. There are very few channels that I'd watch on there -- and I don't really like their on-demand/library because you can't search by keyword or etc.

I don't want to manually look through a giant library when searching is a common option in many services/similar apps/etc.

I just currently use Tubi sometimes, as it's probably one of the closest & free things you can get that's similar to Netflix.
