Does anyone else here not watch any reality TV?

I used to have this girlfriend in high school who was this huge American Idol fan. I never saw any reality TV before that but I saw a lot of episodes of season 2 because she wanted to watch it with me. We broke up shortly after but since then, I have never seen an episode of any reality show from beginning to end. I cringe everytime I see it on TV. It's one of those things I can't wrap my head around how someone could watch it.

reply

I don't.

Never seen American Idol, Survivor, any of those shows. The only one I watched occasionally was The Real Housewives of NY because it came on after a show I liked and one time I just left it on. Ended up getting sucked into it for a while, then lost interest.

But I haven't had cable/TV for years, so don't watch any of that.

reply

Yeah, there's always been a feeling of non staying power with reality shows for me. It loses it's "appeal" quickly.

reply

It does. They can have a certain amount of entertainment value at the start, but then the novelty wears off.

reply

I haven't really in years (aside from occasionally coming across something but none I watch on any kind of regular basis or go out of my way to watch). I did watch the first 3 seasons of Survivor but it got old at a certain point and in my college years I would watch The Real World on MTV but we're talking back in the 90s when reality TV hadn't become a thing yet.

reply

I can't believe I actually used to sit through a few episodes of American Idol. I couldn't even think of doing that now.

reply

No. I can’t imagine why anyone else does, and I have a good imagination.

reply

You have a good imagination?
Try to imagine being friendly and posting stuff worth reading...don't hurt yourself though!

reply

I like Pawn Stars, MasterChef, and Hell's Kitchen. I liked American Idol when Simon Cowell was on the show.

reply

Oh, I did watch Pawn Stars a bit. Also that one with the two guys, American Pickers.

reply

PS is so now so thoroughly scripted, and the guys don't actually work at the shop anymore, it's hard to call it a reality show.

I also liked Storage Wars for a number of seasons, but it's kind of played out now, and I think it might be fake.

Cops was good, but now also a little played out. Live PD is not bad..

reply

I think they both are, but PS is probably the worst of the two.

Now that you mention it, I did watch Storage Wars. I've heard it's fake, like the others. But it was entertaining enough at the start.

I've watched more reality TV than I realised. I suppose My Cat From Hell, Pitbulls and Paroles, and The Dog Whisperer qualify as well, and if I still had TV, I'd watch them.

reply

The only ones I've watched are shows like one about border patrol agents (can't remember the exact name) at various crossings along the Canadian border. Also one about lifeguards on Bondi Beach. I found it interesting to see what kind of things they deal with on a daily basis. Other than that, no. No American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, Hoarders, Survivor or anything like that.

reply

I know a friend who loves those border patrol ones. I've seen a few minutes here and there. It's bearable.

reply

I adore Bondi Rescue!!

That to me is actual reality tv. Sure there are some produced moments, (where isn't there?) but the rescues themselves are real.

I have watched some Border Security, but since they don't make any of the Canadian episodes anymore I don't watch it.

reply

Very little. I enjoyed a couple "seasons" of Survivor quite a few years back. I like an NHL hockey talk show and some other sports programming, but I don't think that's what you are aiming for. For how much reality TV is out there, I can't think of anything I look forward to. Seriously. I get my news from the radio.

reply

No, I wouldn't put talk shows or sporting events as reality shows.

reply

I enjoy those 'drop me off in the middle of nowhere' survivalist shows (Survivorman, Naked and Afraid, Man vs. Wild, etc...)

It's fun to watch them bare-hand fish out of the river and attempt to spark a fire and construct a camp

I'm sure it's all BS but it's entertaining

reply

I watched a few Man vs Wild episodes too.

AND Hoarders!

I'm going to have to retract my statement that I don't watch them. I don't now, but obviously watched more of them than I'd first thought 😐

reply

I don't. I don't want to hear about random people's stories.

reply

Me neither.
