All you have to do is to rate my movies and show me yours so I can rate them.
Do you accept this mission?
I would’ve never thought I could take so much Tom Cruise in one week but these movies are like candy to me: Unhealthy but I enjoy them a lot.
Mission Impossible 3 (2006 DVD): I found that the story jumps too quick into the action and we don’t know the new characters enough to really care about what happens. The twist, half an hour in, was weak and predictable and I found the eye-rolling moments more annoying in this than MI:2. E.g.: When you drop a bottle in the streets of Shangai, the bottle will roll and start doing speed (aprox. 10km/h). You don’t need to conceal your face to rob the most dangerous toxic weapon. An everyday normal girl that never fired a gun can take two gun specialists in a row. Oh and I don’t mean to diss the dead but I never liked Seymour Hoffman and the only scene I enjoyed him in this was when he was sitting upside down with his head sticking out of a plane. I seem to be complaining a lot but I actually enjoyed this movie for what it was, I just wanted to point out the reasons why I think the second one is better. I loved the scenes in Rome. The parachute scene was fun and again, enough fights, gunfights and xplosions to keep me happy. My rating: 6.5/10
Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011 Blu-ray): Bad news is; I actually missed Ving Rhames in this one! I think the guy is like a solid rock we can rely on since the last two films. Good news is; I always liked Jeremy Renner and I was happy to see him in top form. I loved his facial expressions. Also, seeing more of Pegg’s Benji was a real pleasure. That scene between Renner and Pegg about jumping down in the fan tunnel was great. Too bad it was followed by a ‘’Ur-anus’’ joke by Cruise. Overall, with a few adjustments, this one could’ve beat the first one but I have to go for a tie with: 7.5/10
Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation (2016 DVD): I was so pumped to find the 4 guys together for a new mission but I thought that there was not enough of Luther (Rhames) and Brandt (Renner). There were many Benji-Hunt moments though. Maybe even too many. Another detail I enjoyed so far in this series were the female characters and again, Agent Faust was a well-acted, well-developed one in this entry. I also loved what they did with Baldwin’s character. Finally, the story was very interesting and kept me guessing as to what was going to happen next. My favorite one yet I must say. Oh and the car/bike chases were formidable, once more. 8/10
PS: Add some realistic blood and one or two sex scenes per film and this entire series would be of higher grade to me. Imagine James Bond without the sex or John Wick without the blood… Now you understand. Maybe.
My ratings of what you watched:
Mission Impossible 3 7/10

Stan & Ollie (2018) 9/10
Crazy, Stupid, Love. (2011) 8/10
Wrong Turn (2003) 7/10
I also watched 6 Laurel and Hardy short films from 1929, average rating 7 or 8/10.
-Sssshhh... (2003)
This Bollywood slasher, which is a total rip-off of Scream (and I Still Know What You Did Last Summer for a part), was actually better than the one I watched last week, probably because it followed the plot more closely. It had more suspense and the songs didn't feel entirely out of place.
-Basic Instinct (1992)
This movie is certainly suspenseful, but oh so silly. Such a product of its time. It's basically a softcore porn movie with nudity for the sake of nudity, but that's no surprise coming from Verhoeven.
-Dead Calm (1989)
Another movie that has suspenseful moments, but is also very silly at times, especially the ending. I still don't get why Kidman ruined her looks, she had a nice head of hair. Billy Zane was over-the-top, but entertaining.
-Alien (1979)
I'm not really a fan of sci-fi or alien movies, but this one works for me. Probably because of its simplicity. It's really just a monster horror movie.
TV Shows:
-Batman - marathon
-Relic Hunter - marathon
-The Bold and the Beautiful - marathon of very old episodes
Fresh (1994) - finally saw it and I enjoyed it despite its brutal nature. The kid was great 7.5/10
Brightburn (2019) - didn't quite work for me with bad Superman thing going on. There was more gore than I expected. 6/10
Death and the Maiden (1994) - some good acting in this with quite the ending. 7/10
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986) - another one off the list. A low budget but nasty serial killer film. I cans see why it was controversial back when released. 7/10
I haven't seen any of the Mission Impossible movies but I will list mine:
Firecracker (1981)
Jillian Kesner stars in this exploitation martial arts movie filmed low budget in the Philippines. Kesner is great in this one and genre fans will recognize many of the other cast members from this time period. Awesome scene where Kesner is attacked by two assailants and her dress is tore off during the combat and she continues the fight until topless ultimately dispatching them both. This one is so obscure i can't even find a VHS copy on Ebay. One great 80's synth score thoughout! 7/10
Black Mamma White Mamma (1973)
Another Philippines filmed exploitation women in prison movie staring Pam Grier and Margret Markov that delivers the expected goods. Sid Haig who plays the cowboy always makes me wonder why he was not a bigger star than he became. 6/10
The Ghost Galleon (1974)
3rd in the series of Blind Dead films, this one takes place on the sea when 2 beauties go missing after sighting the ghost ship and a rescue team is sent. Anyone who is a fan of the original is sure to like this one also. 6/10
Q - The Winged Serpent (1982)
David Carradine, Richard Roundtree and Michael Moriarty star in this strange stop motion monster movie about a winged serpent terrorizing New York city. Ive seen this one many times over the years and still revisit it from time to time because its such an oddity. 6/10
Night Warning (1981)
Early 80's slasher, that I was surprised to see Bill Paxton having a small role in, revolved around an investigation led by a homophobic cop. 5/10
My ratings of what you watched:
Mission Impossible 3 3 (didn't like story, middle or end. Only some interesting scenes in it)
Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol 8.5
Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation 8.5
This week:
MI:Fallout (4/10)
Slightly better than MI:3 but not much. It was too long, repetitive, useless cameos, no tension, nothing grabbed my attention. Should I go on? No, I won't.
Southwest Passage (5/10)
The usual B western from 1954. It was fine for what it was meant to be. If you a western fan then watch out of curiosity only. At least, it was in colour.
Yellow Sky 1948 (8/10)
A really good b/w western. A good story with good cast. I would recommend it if you like westerns.
Although I rate MI:3 way higher than you, I think we are in a minority of people thinking it's the lesser entry of the series.
I wonder what are your thoughts on the most despised one by the general public and the critics MI:2?? Here is my review from last week:
This was a surprisingly good sequel if you ask me. The only general complaint I agree with is the abuse of slow-motions but hey, this movie has enough action, explosions, car chases, gun fights and martial arts to compensate for the eye-rolling moments. Good on you Woo! The story might not be great but hey, this was 19 years ago and I thought it was a well constructed scenario. Thumbs up for me. 7/10
Man, I hope I will enjoy Fallout more than you did. i bought it so I can watch it this week. With a Imdb rating of 7.8, tomatometer of 97% and Metascore of 86, I have great expectations.
i haven't seen a single mission impossible film other than fall-out. never thought i'd care about them.
but i gave fallout a shot last year - middle of a heat wave, needed to get into a theatre to see something - and i walked out thinking it was maybe the second best action film i've ever seen (the raid will always be #1 in my heart).
the stunts in that film are absolutely astonishing, i think.
it's a very standard action film in many ways - people run around trying to stop a bomb from going off - but the action scenes are incredible imo.
I never would’ve thought that I would care about them that much neither but trust me if you loved fallout chances are you will also enjoy ghost protocol and rogue nation .
I would be curious to know what you think about mission impossible 2 though. So much undeserved hate IMo.
i'm definitely going to give them a shot at some point.
the first one was de palma, right? i know i started to watch that once, years ago, when it was on netflix, but i got pulled away and never got back to it.
i know #2 is almost universally hated, or at least seen as inferior, which is something that always kinda intrigues me.
when i do watch them, you know i'll be telling you about it here.
MI:2 was fine but not good. I think at the time I probably would have rated it at 3 or so. I haven't seen it recently so I can't remember if it was as bad as everyones makes out or not.
Everyone seems to have enjoyed MI:Fallout but I found it rather boring. It was more of the same where everything just went on and on and on and on (especially act 3). They could have done with at least about half hour less. Also, they brought some characters in from the past but for no reason whatsoever. The stunts were ok but there was nothing to get hold of in the movie.
Yes, corrected Yellow Sky to 1948 (fat finger syndrome). ;-)
red desert (1964) 2/5 mid-point comment:
this scene in this shack is filled with awful & annoying people laughing & laughing at what seem to be to be extremely non-funny things. i didn't time it, but this scene surely has gone on for at least 15 minutes and has to rank as one of the most irritating stretches of film i've ever seen.
final thoughts:
i am not in a bad mood at all today, but i truly hated this film. i didn't find it an interesting look into a woman's fragile mental state. i found it dull & dreary mostly, and the only times it wasn't dull were when it was annoying.
i found la notte a bit dull as well, but thought it was redeemed by its ending. here, i found no redemption, just endless seconds clicking off the clock until this onerous, endless affair ended.
hagazusa (2017) 3.5 lots of comparisons to the witch, and rightly so, but i also think there's a bit of similarity to ben wheatley's 'a field in england,' which also blends period drama & horror, but throws in some trippy drug elements as well.
i quite enjoyed hagazussa, & it was clearly a labor of love for those involved, but unlike the witch & field..., i did find it ultimately a bit lacking, didn't quite give me the complete, satisfying mental crunch that comes from seeing a complete story.
logan's run (1976) 3.5 i think it's universally recognized that we are allowed to give complete passes to films that played a billion times on tv when we were kids & are indelibly stamped in our memory.
i will never, ever try to make the case to anyone that this is a sci fi classic, but every time i watch it i have what i can only describe as a good time.
pieces (1982) 3.5 the more i watch it the more i love it. lots of fun kills. makes little sense, but in the fun no-sense making way. and lots of attractive women. maybe the best looking slasher cast i've come across so far.
a plea for help here: this movie has a fun 'funky town' rip-off song that plays around the 30 minute mark probably called running around. if anyone knows if there is a full length version of it available anywhere, please pass along that info to me.
slave girls from beyond infinity (1987) 3 it's exactly what you'd expect. alternatively fun/boring. attractive women, some nudity.
revenge of the mekons (2012) 4 fun documentary, more so a tribute to one of the greatest cult rock bands. i'd call them the greatest, but i reserve that top slot for the fall. obviously a labour of love, made with tons of affection. made me dig up about about a 1/2 dozen albums i hadn't played in a decade. also, i had no idea sally timms used to be married to fred armisen. weirdness.
retro puppet master (1999) 1.5 pretty dull. stars greg sestero of 'the room' fame. he doesn't embarrass himself. he's passably good as far as b-movie actors go i'd say.
rolling thunder review: a bob dylan story (2019) 4.5 dylan can seem full of limitless wisdom one moment, completely full of shit the next.
i was a little confounded by what was real & what was artifice here, but that pretty much is the story of dylan's career, i suppose.
the music is continuously great.
even lambs have teeth (2015) 2.5 rather light-hearted compared to most rape revenge films. there's no nudity, & not much focus on the rapes. the revenge kills are fairly brutal, but even then it skirts close to having an almost sit-comish tone at times.
i found the female leads almost unbearably annoying at times, particularly in the opening scenes.
insiang (1976) 4 sad, realistic look at life in a philippine slum. my second viewing. grinding drudgery of life in a manila slum is very well portrayed, but emotional reactions for me were undercut by a slightly melodramatic story.
all i need (2016) 2 you woman is imprisoned by a killer. the first 2/3s plays pretty well. verges on torture porn at times, but it's tense & reasonably creepy. sort of peters out towards the end rather than continuing to build, though.
unrelated (2007) 3.5 tom hiddleston is a good looking rascal.
it ebbs & flows very nicely, with a nice naturalistic manner, until there's an emotional climax that really felt terribly false & out of place with all that came before & after.
maybe this is the way women talk to other women in real life when they're at their lowest moment, but it made me very uncomfortable & caused me to cringe & look away.
lots to admire in it regardless.
long lost (2018) 3.5 silly but fun, twisty thriller. ending doesn't quite live up to the promise of what came before, but i had a very very very good time watching it.
toy story (1995) 5 my first watch ever. why? i don't know.
team america: world police (2004) 4 that vomit scene is the only stain on this thing.
it's complete fun from start to finish. except for that needless bit of gross-out business.
secret sunshine (2007) 4 a widow trying to rebuild her life instead has it upended by more tragedy.
subtly moving, one of the best representations of religious belief i've personally seen in a movie, and overall just a great film about grief. would be one of the best movies i've ever seen if it wasn't so bloody long.
there was no need for this to be 140 minutes long.
toy story 2 (1999) 5 a dog-damned delight.
terrifier (2016) 3.5 if you're going to make a slasher, go full in. make it vicious & bloody & brutal.
this film gets things right.
the only reason i don't move my rating up to a 4 or more is because the foxiest girls don't stick around long enough for my liking.
regardless, one of my favourite slashers of recent years.
the hazing (2004) 2.5 some fun gore effects, & occasionally fun, but rather lifeless for long stretches, & it has a rather fuzzy, bland visual tone that made me not want to look at it.
Toy Story: 9/10
Toy Story 2:9/10
Team America: I need to see it one more time but I remember loving it. 7.5/10
Terrifier: fun 6.5/10
Secret Sunshine looks interesting
