Are you allowed to build your own spaceship and leave Earth?

Would the government/police interfere and stop your project in it's tracks or would they just think you are crazy and leave you alone? I think i've heard that you can't but i don't know what exact law you would break.

reply

Aren't private companies working on space travel?

Good question!

reply

Not that i've heard of.

reply

I just did a quick google search to make sure I wasn't imagining things, and The US has 8 private companies and China 10.

reply

Oh, wow, ok. I was thinking more as a home project though. Not through a registered company or such.

reply

I did get that, and I don't know the answer, but I thought that one could just always register as a company and it would be okay.

reply

True. Seems you could get around it that way. I feel if any of those small companies somehow got ahead of the big known ones they would be bought up.

reply

Have you seen The Astronaut Farmer?

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0469263/?ref_=nv_sr_1?ref_=nv_sr_1

reply

No, i haven't, thanks for the tip XD

reply

It's probably illegal as the airspace above you is owned by the government.

Also, certain power sources would be illegal.

reply

So technically the government can forbid you from breathing because they own the air.

reply

They own the space, not the air.

They own the outline of the country right up into space.

reply

Isn't the air a part of the airspace?

reply

No.

In the US air would fall under an inalienable right, meaning something that cannot be taken away from anyone.

The space aspect has to do with national security.

reply

I can't buy a pack of smokes or a box of ammo without the Gov't getting involved...I'd assume they'd pile on you right away for just about anything👎

reply

Good point.

reply

God Bless the US but 'Land of the Free..?'
Some days I wonder.

reply

Should try bying ammo legally here in Sweden, let alone a gun, you have it good over there compared to us XD

reply

I bet we do Ged, good point

As you probably know we have a Bill of Rights here in the US that allows for an average fellow such as myself to stockpile guns and ammunition, but new crummy lawmakers keep making it harder and it is against the free spirit of America to do so
The USA is heavily armed, why do these Dem Congress-Dummies keep trying to mess with who we are?

I'm heavily armed and have more ammo than I could possibly carry, I just worry about future generations

reply

So are we! There are some of the Dem Congress-Dummies who are advocating those of us who own/carry firearms be required to purchase insurance. They equate the requirement to have auto insurance with a requirement to have firearm insurance. One MAJOR difference....and it’s a biggie....driving a vehicle is *not a right*! Owning a firearm *is a right* as per the 2nd Amendment in The Bill of Rights of our United States Constitution.

reply

It seems a simple fix to me
Any psycho lunatic that does ANYTHING illegal with a firearm in hand serves a life term in prison...no parole, no 'good time behavior/time off' bullshit

Lock up all of the dirtbags for life terms and leave the rest of us alone

I have a proper arsenal and have no wish to ever use any of it except during hunting season
That's the American way

Lock up ALL the dirtbags with priors and gun charges...it's so obvious!!

reply

They figured an armed society is harder to control maybe.

reply

Correct
That's why many of us stockpile ammo
There will never be a 'Boss' here...Never.

reply

I like the way you people think. Could need some of that patriotism and dependence here. My people are the opposite and just let's the government screw everyone over with their stupid ideas.

reply

Oh, I love the US but they screw us over here too...the gun laws are really unfair to law-abiding Americans, they let rapists and killers out of prison here (!!!) the Gov't taxes the Middle Class 32% on the dollar to support losers and bums who should just live under bridges and collect cans

I know a lot of decent, middle class, hard working people who are getting tired of a lot of this horseshit

reply

Here they just give criminals too low sentences so they are out on the street again as quick as they got locked away unless in some cases if they are declared as mentally disturbed. They also let some leave the prison on their own and go on permissions for a few hours each. This happened with one of our most famous criminals who is sentenced and still does time for raping and killing two young girls. One of them he even lit on fire. People reported to have seen him shopping ice cream in a mall. It's frustrating and insulting to the families how they cuddle with these deranged individuals.

reply

That's utterly distressing Ged

Some of these sentences are beyond my ability to explain
A 6X5 windowless cement box is where such a beast belongs, and I would hope it's very cold with a piss smelling mattress
and a thin blanket for such a disgusting monster

reply

It would be the most fair, but fairness and justice is obviously not what is being aimed for.

reply

Terrible...

I see these parents nowadays being very protective of their children and I often want to give a hardy 'Harumph!' but then I realize I act the same way with my own kids
I don't let them out of my sight!

Maybe the world was always full of perverts and psychos...horrible things just seem to happen way more often now

reply

I think it always was, we just hear more about it than before.

reply

Maybe so...Maybe raising little kids puts me on edge

reply

I can understand it would.

I watch Investigative Discovery on the ID channel which airs mostly true crime stories. OMGosh! I knew some humans have a demented soul, but what I’ve watched on some episodes goes beyond horrific! You are looking into the eyes of pure evil! Sure we hear/read about crimes from the news, but my god, when I get the full details my mind cannot comprehend such evil.

One of the detectives (may or may not be an actor) made a statement that has stuck with me. He said to the effect of “If the crime is horrific, more than likely his/her name is already on the board or in a murder book.”

I find myself screaming at the tv “Why wasn’t s/he in prison for life or executed for the previous crime (s)? The West/North West states have the most lenient sentences. So do our New England states. The South and Southwest states have the tougher sentences. I just shake my head in dismay.

One documentary I watched was about a reporter’s interview with Ted Bundy. I was chilled when the reporter’s voice over stated “Ted Bundy had blue eyes, but I actually saw them turn black when reliving his crimes!”

We had one completed home invasion. We then had an attempted one stopped by the reinforcement due to the first one. And the anti-Bill of Rights knuckleheads want to curb our gun ownership? This while we pay for their security!

reply

You need a weapon at home, too bad we can't carry at all times in NY

We have dangerous freaks here:/

reply

In addition, to countries owning the air space they typically have laws about explosives.

So, using modern rockets would require massive amounts of explosive material and to actually set the explosion off would be, illegally exploding things.

We live in a controlled environment except for very mundane activities.

reply

When you pass through parts of the government-controlled aerospace, you'd be in violation, but once you're past that, what are they gonna do?

reply

Not much, seems hard to stop a rocket/shuttle that already took off unless they shoot you down or something.

I believe if you simply renounced your citizenship, and secured an official illegal alien status, then the Trump administration will grant you temporary access to pass through as long as the SN-FA326-77(c) access request form is file-stamped (and 3rd party notarized!) as "Voluntary Deportation (Non-Terrestrial)."

Note that this adds a 100 mile Restraining Order stipend regarding the Moon, so steer clear!

reply

lol, that last part is probably something they would do, very plausible.

reply

In the USA, any kind of atmospheric flight (including going to space) is controlled by the Federal Aviation Administration. They have an office devoted to overseeing and approving requests to fly to space. From their website:

"The FAA issues a commercial space transportation license or experimental permit when we determine that your launch or reentry proposal, your proposal to operate a launch or reentry site, or your proposal to test equipment, design or operating techniques will not jeopardize public health and safety, property, U.S. national security or foreign policy interests, or international obligations of the United States."

So it is legal, but you have to jump through a few administrative hoops to get there.

reply

Making it through the bureaucracy might be a mess. I imagine they would make it as hard as possible for you to escape this planet.

reply

I got the feeling that here in the UK the Government seemed to be actively encouraging it, as long as you followed the correct procedure (see my post below).

reply

It's good if they do. I still wonder how things would go down if someone actually went into space on their own. Like if they headed for the moon for example.

reply

I'd love it if some eccentric trillionaire just said, 'Sod it! I'm off!'

reply

One can hope :-)

Regulating spaceflight (UK)

The Government is committed to enabling safe and sustainable commercial growth in the spaceflight sector through efficient and effective regulation. This means that if you wish to carry out spaceflight activities, you will need to apply for a licence from either the UK Space Agency or the Civil Aviation Authority. These licences are:
•satellite operator licence
•launch vehicle operator licence
•spaceport licence
•range control licence

Currently it is only possible to apply for a satellite operator licence under the Outer Space Act 1986. However, once the Space Industry Act 2018 and the associated secondary legislation are in force, it will also be possible to apply for licences relating to launch from the UK.

Find out more information on applying for a satellite operator licence, including what to expect from the licensing process and the obligations of licensees.
