Are you allowed to build your own spaceship and leave Earth?

Would the government/police interfere and stop your project in it's tracks or would they just think you are crazy and leave you alone? I think i've heard that you can't but i don't know what exact law you would break.

If you can get through all the red tape and permitting that's certainly required when it comes to airspace, then you're probably good to go.
