Metrosexual.

Anyone familiar with the term Metrosexual? I think the only time I heard it was listening to Mike and Mike on ESPN radio in the morning. Their shtick was they were the Odd Couple. Golic is an ex football lineman, a big brute, not exactly dim but a real meat and potatoes guy. Greenberg is a regular size professional broadcaster, a little more delicate and probably from a comfortable family in an urban setting. Greenberg was said to be "Metrosexual," although I would call it a mild case. Frankly, I think it was simply a shtick to point out how different the two are, but the idea stuck with me. Some days I try to dress a little better than is necessary. Other than that, I don't use any hair products or flash any facial hair.
Anyone have any thoughts about Metrosexuality?

Where do you draw the line, in terms of who is or isn't a 'metrosexual'?

Is it any guy who takes some cursory pride in their appearance before they leave the house (even if it simply amounts to a shower, and a new change of pants and socks) or does it require very meticulous grooming as per that Rylan guy from The X-Factor?

reply

If it takes you more time to get ready for a night out than your lady needs you just might be a MetrošŸ˜¬

reply

I think it's likely an excessive amount of care going into your appearance. I have a colleague who is a young, handsome and mild mannered guy. He dresses well, but what strikes me is every hair is in place. I've been letting me hair get long, and just a little wind pushes it all around. Sometimes I wonder if I look frightful, but since I rarely look in the mirror, I don't know. I doubt anyone cares, but sometimes I wonder if people think I should pay a little more attention to my look.

reply

Is the overly-made-up look ever attractive, especially on a man?

I think women tend to prefer guys who are handsome and take pride in their appearance, but still allow the odd hair to grow out of place. I don't think overly vain and narcissistic men are particularly attractive.

In fact, I purposefully ensure that I don't look too pristine.

One of my best buddies is a Metro, we joke on him all the time, in good fun of course!
He gets manicures, wears fancy clothes and drives a fancy car, never a hair out of place...this guy makes the rest of us look bad lol
To each his own I say

reply

A lot of scruffy dudebro types drive fancy cars. I'm not sure a fancy car necessarily adds to the metrosexual look.

reply

Can't hurt;)

reply

Even a Pontiac Aztek didn't hurt Walter White's metrosexuality.

reply

I didn't think Walt was metro. Any particular reason you say this, or is it just an opportunity to point out the make of his car?

reply

I think he was. He sported well groomed mustache and goatee, wore hipster style eyeglasses, completed with a fancy pork pie hat. Is that not a description of a metrosexual?

reply

I probably didn't watch Breaking Bad as close as you. I don't remember him in that get up. Sounds like Walt was affecting a persona for business purposes. But I'm just guessing here.

reply

Metrosexual is the new dandy.

reply

Foppish too!

Metrosexual was a popular term right before the same sex marriage electioneering, around when every show on prime time TV was starting to acclimatize us to homosexuality like Queer Eye For The Straight Guy. Then it went away. If you look at some of these dating websites, they're full of women who claim to be something called "sapiosexual". Ever heard of that? I hadn't. It looks like some kind of sick cult.

reply

Yeah, very few people would be genuine sapiosexuals. Considering, intellect alone isn't highly valued unless the person in question has adequate social skills and is at least average looking.

All the ways that people try to appear unique by using niche terms to describe themselves are laughable. I've even seen some people online fake having a mental illness in order to appear unique.

reply

Metrosexual has been around since the 90s.

reply

I'm Old !!

reply

Me too.

Metrosexual is a portmanteau of metropolitan and heterosexual, coined in 1994 describing a man (especially one living in an urban, post-industrial, capitalist culture) who is especially meticulous about his grooming and appearance, typically spending a significant amount of time and money on shopping as part of this. I had to look it up because I've never heard the term either.

reply

Yeah, I don't see the term very often. Ever, actually, except for what I said above. Funny how most terms that end with "sexual" are describing one's sexual preference, i.e., hetero-, homo-, bi-, pan-, etc. But I always get a chuckle when I think of "metrosexual."

reply

Am I a Metrosexual due to my preference for having sex with LA Metro buses?

reply

hahahahaha!
