Oscar bait style acting

You know what I'm talking about. The kind of scene where an actor looks almost directly to the camera while giving a dramatic monologue with tears pouring down their face.

Anyone else hate this sorta acting style? It always strikes me as obnoxious and fake. It seems as though they've been specifically engineered to look good at the award show as they announce each nominee. How often does this happen in real-life anyway?

A good example of this kinda scene would be this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzJCPw5KiFE

I guess it would depend on the context. I haven’t seen the film from which your clip is taken. The clip itself shows some fine work by both actors.

They take in people off the street to do that same thing for a daytime soap opera, and they do it in one take.

This is the exact reason why I hate Daniel Day-Lewis.

Carey Mulligan does this all the time.

Automatic 1/10. Usually the character even has to have AIDS or be in a concentration camp too.

LOL

Depends on the role and the context. Although I would never describe it as 'obnoxious'.

And the example you give is from a movie based on a play -- so it's much more prone to quasi-Hamlet moments.
