If You HATE New Movies...
Let's say you hate 99% of newer movies.. What's the 1% you do you like?
EDIT: Movies from this century.. If you still don't know any, anything from the 80s onward.

I liked "Wonder Woman." It was a great movie :). We're interested in seeing the 3rd "How to Train Your Dragon" movie, since we're fans of the first 2. My dad and brother and I were curious about "Alita: Battle Angel." We missed out on seeing "Ready Player One" in theaters, but we did see it while on vacation up in the mountains, and we love it :D. It's now part of our DVD library.
shareI will typically see the superhero movies that come out.
1. I am older and dreamed of seeing these as movies, so they're a must see.
2. They actually have a plot that is "epic" in nature and so I want to see where it's going.
3. They have characters that actually have defined personalities and the actors have to play the part, not just be themselves in the movie.
4. They are generally high quality films.
My favorite films come from the 30s, 40s, and 50s, with some in the 60s being okay. Back then, they would have actual writers making them and so they tended to have plot and characters. So, they were predictable formula films.
It's my belief that modern American films are largely created by the relatives, etc of the jewish people that run the industry. So, you get a bunch of regular dudes in a room and they basically make the same kind of movies over and over.
I can't even think of the last complex social, crime, etc film that I've seen. There is nothing fresh and no interesting genre other than superhero movies, which are just good, not great, and don't have much mystery or depth to them.
Nepotism ruined film in my opinion.
Yeah, superhero movies while they are hated by movie snobs actually are good quality movies. They are obviously better made than typical action flicks from the 80s and 90s like various Van Damme and Schwarzenegger movies, which like you said, the stars mostly played their characters as themselves.
shareTrue
Being a marvel comics kid in the late 60s early 70s, these movies are HUGE gifts to the long time fans.
Finding Nemo and Tangled are the only post-2000 movies that I own. (Okay, also Om Shanti Om, but nobody here cares about that)
shareI don't necessarily 'hate' new movies. I just think it's rare to find a good memorable movie nowadays. It's not that good movies aren't being made anymore. They're just few and far in between.
shareI know exactly what you mean... I figure people can only dedicate so much free time to a movie - might as well go with the probabilities.
shareThere will always be good movies, they’re just not always the popular box office breaking kind.
Could you please name some for us?
shareI like (most of) Tarantino & Coen Bros films. YMMV, but they are quality made entertainment.
Here's a few more from my Netflix/Amazon viewing activity:
Children of Men
City of God
Chappaquiddick
Boyhood (fantastic film)
The Florida Project
It Follows (horror)
Hereditary (horror)
The Homesman (western)
Prisoners
End of Watch
Miss Stevens
Take Me To The River
Uncle John
The Sisters Brithers (western)
Nightcrawler
Hell or High Water
I could go on & on...
Many of those are very bad films with very bad plot holes or weak plots.
You should check out movies from the 40s as I mentioned before.
I understand everybody’s taste is different .
Some of us get stuck in the past.
At least you tried
I love movies from the 1940s
shareLots of fine movies from the 40s... American and Italian.
"Bicycle Thieves"
If you would like to see more good stuff from this century, try cinema from a non-English speaking country.. "Shoplifters" is one that was replied back (different forum with no politics)
shareI haven't seen all that many, but the last one that comes to mind, The Shape of Water, I liked a lot.
shareShape of water didn't really have a plot and almost no theme/message.
That's the problem with most films today.
They have no important theme. Maybe it will be something cliched like "freedom of choice" or something we already know, like racism is bad, etc.
Older films, you can sit around and discuss if you like, but not many modern films.
Once again, it's totally bizarre that superhero movies have long plots that span many films. They have characters that are metaphors for real people, and you can discuss them or maybe even write a paper on them. Not much else out there like it.
I'm a psychotherapist and use superhero stories as explanations about how to handle trauma and all kinds of stuff. People love it too.
I tend to prefer movies from the 1960's, but there are some more recent films, from the 70's and 80's that I like, as well. I guess I'm somewhat old-fashioned and conservative at heart when it comes to movies, and, especially when it comes to re-makes and/or re-boots of older classic movies.
