Performances that steal the show...

from the main character.

Matt Dillon in There's Something About Mary

reply

William Fichtner in Drive Angry

Bill Murray in Charlie’s Angels

Both those guys MADE their respective movies.

reply

Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs
Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting
Bruce in Jaws

Hopkins was of course superb in Silence . . . , but how does he not count as a main character? The OP asked for secondary characters who stole the thunder. What am I missing? Amount of screen time?

reply

I consider him supporting in Silence and Foster the lead, but my opinion is often incorrect. I haven't seen it in a really long time and perhaps am confusing with Red Dragon as well.

So scratch Hopkins and I'll replace that with Ben Kingsley in Sexy Beast. He totally outshone Ray Winstone.

I'll also say Alec Guinness in A New Hope, and Bill Murray in Zombieland.

I only questioned you because you have always struck me as being estimabley bright, and I am always open to learning. You may have noticed that there are posters I chastise. You aren’t one! Yes, Lechter may be a supporting player, and Clarice the protagonist and Buffalo Bill the antagonist. The dominance of Hopkins’ performance makes it hard for me to choose.

Bravo for all your additional choices.

We need more posters like you. IRL one of the things that I do is to recruit talent. Given what I’ve seen happening on this overly-politicized site is to have a mission to retain talent, because we are losing too much of it, for reasons I don’t want to explain. I will praise and welcome posters who are like you.

By the way, and I know that you know this, EVERYONE’S opinion is often incorrect!

I will never criticize a poster who is like you. I will only ask for clarification.

I just checked as I was curious and Hopkins won the Oscar for best actor in Silence. Lol. So yeah, I was totally wrong.

Wow. Thank you for your kind words. Kindness means so much on an Internet so obsessed with hate. I know I avoid commenting on many topics that turn political (not always) just because I don't like to spend my time on anger.

I've enjoyed our interactions on here, even though you prove me wrong. :p

This probably sounds cheesy as all daylights, but I don’t think there is any such thing as too much kindness, digital communication be damned. All souls, and especially good souls, deserve kindness and acceptance.

I enjoy our interactions as well. I have never wanted to show that you, or anyone who is like you are, wrong. I have only wanted to understand your thinking. Thinking matters to me.
