I agree with Unforgiven and Mississippi Burning.

Number three would either be Crimson Tide, The Royal Tenebaums and I also enjoyed him very much in Get Shorty. It was refreshing to see him in a comedic role.

I like Hackman, but I have to say that The Posiedon Adventure is my least favourite of his. I enjoy that movie and often do double features with that and The Towering Inferno, but I don't know what it is. Reverend Scott just irritates me to no end.

I find his performance in The Poseidon Adventure incredibly powerful, especially in the scene after poor Shelley Winters has just died. Yes, the film is a hacky disaster film, but I honestly think Hackman is superb here, and it's partly because his Reverend Scott is such a self-righteous, and even irritating, SOB, that I think it works so well. He's the hero, he's the guy whose wisdom and conviction lead at least a few of the ship's passengers to safety, and yet there's no mistaking that he can be a right a-hole at times. And that to me is how heroes should be portrayed. It's too easy to make heroic protagonists flawless. It's much more interesting when they're given shades of grey, and where one can see how they might put people off despite their best efforts and their otherwise admirable qualities.

That said, Hackman is one of my all-time favourite actors more for his whole body of work rather than for any two or three outstanding performances. He's one of those actors who manages to elevate an otherwise mediocre film simply by his mere presence.

I get what you are saying, and maybe it's because as much as I love disaster movies, PA had a very irritating cast all around. I just thought that Hackman was over the top and perhaps it was the direction, but I didn't feel that he was his best.

The French Connection
Get Shorty
Hoosiers

Too many to narrow down to just three. Amongst the titles that haven't yet been mentioned:

Heist
The Quick and the Dead
No Way Out

Welcome to Mooseport is clearly his best.

Kidding of course.

Unforgiven
The French Connection
And I gotta give some love for his Lex Luthor in Superman
