Are there any films on IMDb's top 250 that are directed by women?

I got into a minor argument with a feminist who said that the film industry is sexist because the lack of female directors. I said that it's hard to tell because we don't know how many women want to be directors and how many actually become directors. I said to her, "look at IMDb's top 250. How many movies on that list are directed by women? If women were good at it, you would figure there would be a lot on there. Maybe there's just not that many interested to begin with. So, how many films on IMDb's top 250 are directed by women?

There is a documentary about this very real issue. It's called 'Half The Picture'. Please watch it. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5713994/?ref_=nm_flmg_slf_1
And is American Psycho in the top 250? It was directed by a woman. I'm gonna go take a look and see and report back.

If you look at Nobel prizes, women never win the more objective categories like physics. They win the subjective categories like literature. It shows that our society is biased in favor of women. When we have discretion, we use it in their favor rather than against them. The real enemy of feminist women is biology and nature not sexism. There are no female inventors for the same reason there are no female criminally insane.

Donna Strickland won the Nobel Prize in physics THIS YEAR. Don't bother replying back to me, I've seen the kinds of posts you make and I don't want anything to do with you.

reply

When you ignore, you're ignorant.

Don't bother replying back to me

You ignored that.

Look, I don't want to argue. We just disagree.

Women are overrepresented as producers. There are a couple women directors. There are no female cinematographers. Are we really to believe that within Hollywood, there is no sexism in a lucrative area like production, but an extreme amount of sexism in a dull behind the scenes role like cinematography? It's just stupid.

It's the same thing with STEM. It's about 20% women whereas law school and medical school is 50%. Geeks and nerds were secretly the real true "old boy's club" all along?

How about Chess? Why do women need their own separate league for chess?

I thought there'd be a few, I'm surprised Big (1988) or Near Dark isn't in the top 250.

reply

I thought maybe something from Agnes Varda or Agnieszka Holland. Personally I find non-English female directors better than English-speaking ones.

reply

Not a single one.

reply

Kind of crazy that a platform like IMDB, that allows any user to vote for a film, doesn't have a single female directed movie on the top 250. I find it strange.

reply

how many women are using this site? Very few. Same with IMDB.

City of God (2002) - co-directed by Kátia Lund

That's the only one I see.

That list keeps on shifting. There was a time that Jane Campion was on it for The Piano.

reply

I've been going on IMDb roughly since 2003 or 2004 and I don't remember that being there.

reply

I'm pretty sure it was after it came out for a couple of years.
