Millennials Is Such a Stupid Label.

Whatever happened to the Generation Y moniker?
At first I thought "millennial" referred to those born in the late '90's and early 2000's, due to the name...But it's supposed to encompass those born as early as 1981...Why?
I and billions of others didn't grow up with the Internet and social media or the terrorist drum being banged by politics and media. I used VCR's and phones with cords. I grew up during the grunge and gangster rap scene; the Gulf War; the end of the Cold War and its after effects; capitalist equilibrium and the so called "end of politics"; Clinton sex scandals; 90's cynicism; OJ Simpson; Melrose Place; Seinfeld; and so forth.
How are those "formative" experiences supposed to match with those born in 2000 and after?

In conclusion; the label is just stupid and misleading, and should be reserved (if it has to be) to those born much closer to the turn of the century.

Very well laid-out. Too much is happening at once, too aware of changes in technology in a short amount of time. The last two decades are harder to pin down or define because of this development. It might end up being like the Baby Boomers, with two phases.

The first being, the post-war boomers, those born in the mid 1940s and early 1950s, whose parents are most likely to be the people who directly endured World War II in some capacity. Then, there's the "Generation Jones" Boomers, who rejected the traditional societal values of their parents, having been born into more pleasant economic conditions going into the 1960s when the middle grew class exponentially.

That's a great point. Technological changes have been rapid throughout the last two decades.
It seems sociologists who lump those born as early as 1980 with those born in 2000 think both groups evolved with the same technology.
It seems the only criteria for lumping together those born 20 years apart is housing affordability, wages, and simply owning a PC.

I didn't even know about the phases. They are much needed when those born in the 1960's had a wildly different experience growing up than those born in the '40's.
Although I still think the Millennial label for those born as early as 1980 is dumb and misleading.

I spent the first 8 years of my childhood without the internet, and learned to appreciate how far we came when it came to advancement in communication.

It's not the title "Millennial" or Generation Y that bothers me. It's the fact that everyone out there labels those from my generation in a negative light. All they ever pay attention to are the whiny, spoiled, lazy, liberals born in my generation, and then lump all the rest of us in there with them, bringing about the stereotypes I loathe and despise that people have heaped on my generation. I don't appreciate being labeled like that.

Yeah, I was 13.5 when the Year 2000 came around. Yes, I was born in the 80s. But I learned a long time ago that the universe didn't revolve around me, and society doesn't owe me anything. Yes, I live with my family, but that is due to economic reasons while I'm training to become a major contributor to society (and believe me, my job is going to be integral to the medical field). And no, I have never voted Democrap, and don't ever expect me to.

reply

It's mostly those on your own side that judge "Millennials" as selfie obsessed; narcissistic layabouts who are too "lazy" to move out of home - while lower wages, unaffordable housing; and a lack of job security are dismissed as "entitled whinging".
So please get angry at conservatives if you want to get angry at stereotypes.

You are using liberal as a slur and seeming confuse the DNC and liberalism. Individual rights, democracy, and capitalism are all products of liberalism. The Bill of Rights is liberalism. The 2nd amendment is liberalism. Democrat and republican are political parties with agendas that change over time, they are not sports teams or ideologies. Hope that sorts some of your confusion.

Man, who cares about labels anyway. The other night I was hanging with a 25 year old kid. He was awesome. Knew a lot about real life, music, and history that happened outside of his life span. The kid knew good music; Allman Bros, early gangster rap, etc. The kid had great taste in music and didn’t act like an entitled shit.
Just don’t act like a silly twot and you won’t be labeled as one. Labels that others put on you mean absolutely nothing anyway. It’s how you carry and conduct yourself. Who cares what people think as long as you are happy with yourself at the end of the day and can go to sleep at night knowing you’re a good person that didn’t hurt anyone else. These are the things that matter. Whining about being labeled incorrectly makes you sound like a millennial douchebag😉

reply

I haven't been called a "Millennial" once in my entire life. Definitions such as "Millennials" or "Boomers" are used in sociological studies, and we're allowed to have a viewpoint on such things.
It's funny that you decry labels and proclaim something along the lines of "Who cares about stereotypes?" before ending with a stereotypical dig yourself. You're also stuck into stereotypes yourself by expecting a 25 year old to be an entitled brat.

reply

Look here millennial (now ya have!) you’re correct. I do expect most of you youngins’ to act like entitled brats because that has been my experience with you. I was pleasantly surprised when this kid didn’t act like a know-it-all shit. We actually learned from eachother and had great discussions.
I wish I could say the same for you, but you already bore me with your predictable response so this conversation is over for me. I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings by making a small dig at your expense. Maybe you should drink a Red Bull and go tweet about it.

reply

Haha "who cares about labels and stereotypes" cries the one of which they don't apply and proceeds to use them on others.

Are you trying to live up to a stereotype yourself? It's hard not to imagine a caricature of a frutrasted old "boomer" or "Gen X'er" shaking their fist at their phone screen or at the nearest cloud rolling by - "Those bloody youngins! Respect my dishrag wisdom!" 🤣🤣

Anyway thanks both for the hilarity and for also reminding me quickly why I don't contribute much here - where replies are sparse with a 70% of chance of idiocy.

reply

Ah young millennial, it seems you missed my point entirely. You see, I was not the one crying about being labeled incorrectly as a millennial, that was you my dear. I was trying to explain that just because you are labeled as such, doesn’t mean you have to act this way. It seems after reading your predictable, regurgitated response, that doesn’t have one original thought in it, that you are 100% labeled correctly as a millennial. Maybe this is something you could work on instead of worrying about what you are labeled as by society. You feel? I would start by going and reading a book, but what do I know? According to you I’m just some frustrated old gen x’er. Good luck kid.

reply

Again, I've never personally being called a "Millennial". I'm in my mid 30's and far and away from your image of a latte sipping, Twitter using; sensitive young Hipster type. But you - you play the image of a frutrasted, fist shaking "boomer" to a tee. It's quite funny particularly your use of "youngins". Are you Aussie? You sound like an avid ACA viewer.

Also quite funny, again, is your insistence that "Millennials" shouldn't be offended by stereotypes while employing stereotypes and degrading Millenials yourself. And I highly doubt you've been able to predict my responses.

When was the last time you read a book Archie?

reply

Omg you’re so boring! I was trying to help you but you just want to get in some bullshit tit for tat meaningless argument that I could give a fuck about. I don’t care how old you are, I don’t care what image you’re getting of me, now go to your room and leave me alone you little whippersnapper, granny is trying to get shitfaced.

reply

Leave me alone? You're the one that keeps responding like a frutrasted Archie Bunker 🤣

reply

That’s cause I always get the last word kid. Past your bedtime sonny. My mind is riddled with dementia and Alzheimer’s and I’m not the one. Don’t make me wake up grandpa, you know how he likes you to sit on his lap.

reply

I don't need your life story.

reply

usually it is the older generation that does not like the younger one, let us not be surprised when that always turns out to be true. This was the case with my parents too, and their parents, when they were little and rebelling in the 60's. The newer generation from the last 30 years are definitely rebelling against what was before, unconsciously usually, it is just a change.

reply

^^^This 100%. Older generation always blame the younger generation. I cringe at the "Blame the millennials" crowd.

reply

Yeah, I mean, when my generation gets old, who are we gonna blame? The Gen Z's or the iGeneration brats.

reply

Gen Z hate the “iGen” label.

reply

Don't blame them. It sounds stupidly redundant and stereotypical.

reply

Marketers hated GenX, and GenY was shaping up to be another small group not much different so marketing gurus invented millennial so they could define it and tell people who they are in order to better sell to them and it worked. In reality millennials are at least 2, if not 3, distinct groups.

reply

What comes after milennials? if millenials are the ones who were just turning into adults in 2000ad , then there should, by now, be a whole bunch of 19 year olds born 2000
Are they millenials too?
some would say yes , as they think millenial means 'born 2000' , not 'turned 18 in 2000' so we seam to be stuck with both definitions , giving this "generation tag" a span of about 40 years , which is a little bigger than normal.

reply

Great point. So today's generation are of the same generation born in 1980? That really does not work.

reply

those early 80's millennials still think they're young and hip too lol
