Any fans of From Hell (2001)?

I have revisited it recently and honestly think it is a flawed masterpiece. Ian Holm is a genius.

reply

Ian Holm was pretty effective in his role. The only time I've seen him be more frightening was in that scene in Lord of the Rings where he looks possessed.

reply

Yes he was very convincing as a physician as well.

reply

gore porn really, the victorians were fvcked up

reply

Really? I didn’t think it was that graphic, just the final murder.

reply

I've read a little about the actual case and Jack the Ripper's crimes make for appalling subject matter.

reply

Yes, I've seen it multiple times. I really like the creepy Victorian atmosphere.

reply

Yeah the Hughes brothers did an amazing job

reply

FLASHBACK!

reply

Read the graphic novel - Alan Moore is a genius.

reply

Is it good? Did you like the movie?

reply

Everything Alan Moore does is brilliant and yes I loved the film.

reply

Pretty good movie!

If only they'd cast a female lead who was believable as a Victorian Whitechapel street whore, it might have been really good.

reply

Yeah, was Heather Graham too attractive, too Ametican or just a bad actor?

reply

All of the above, x100! The role was written as a street whore who could barely kept herself fed and who wouldn't have access to indoor plumbing when she was able to pay for a "doss", she should have been filthy and haggard. But for some reason the filmmakers hired this raving beauty of an actress, and made her look like the kind of woman the Prince of Wales would beg to accept jewels and palaces. Plus they gave her this godawful vermillion wig, done in a modern style.

It really is a shame, when she's not onscreen the movie really is very good, but she appears she takes me right out of Victorian London and into modern Hollywood.

reply

I didn't mind it. It's one of those movies that could've been better, but did a fine job regardless.
