Is there virtue in "sameness" and "conformity"?

In modern Western society uniqueness and individual differences are celebrated, but do you think sameness and conformity are still valid ideals to hold?

reply

Of course, but they're more expectations. Uniqueness and differences are surprises.

Now be careful, because your next post is # 666.

Hehe!

...oops!

reply

Only in the workplace.

reply

I don't know if there's virtue in it, but I think many folks find security and contentment in sameness and conformity.

reply

Security indeed, as there is virtue in conforming to a view like "Murder is wrong."

People like uniformity. If I go to Starbucks, I expect them to all sell the same menu.

If I go to a supermarket, a roughly expect them to stock the same things.

I like uniqueness in some ways but not others. Take for example indicators (turn signals) on cars, I've noticed luxury brands taking liberties like they make patterns. I'd prefer them to all just blink the same (and I hate how in America, the brake light blinks, it should be its own unique yellow light.)

Uniqueness in car interface design is dangerous. The unique transmission system in Anton Yelchin's Jeep arguably took his life.

reply

That's true. I don't like all the display screens new cars have, very distracting.
